Chapter 13 - The Night Charleston Fell SilentBy midnight, Charleston had lost power in half the city.

Banks closed.

Traffic lights failed.

Police communications collapsed.

The Meridian Network had been activated.

Claire finally understood what her father had built.

It wasn't merely information.

It was infrastructure.

Adrian's men barricaded the estate.

Her parents worked at computers in the old study.

Claire stood beside Adrian.

“You're hurt.”

“I've had worse.”

“You almost died.”

“So did you.”

He looked at her.

“That's becoming a habit.”

She almost smiled.

Then the windows shattered.

Men poured onto the lawn.

Gunfire exploded.

Adrian pulled Claire behind the wall.

“Stay here.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You need the key.”

Adrian stopped.

The two halves of the key were glowing faintly.

Her father had explained that the network's core could only be accessed by two bloodlines.

Whitmore.

Voss.

Claire and Adrian.

Together.

They descended beneath the estate.

The chamber was enormous.

Servers stretched across the walls.

At the center stood a black terminal.

Jonathan followed.

“This is the heart of Meridian.”

Claire touched the console.

A message appeared.

WELCOME, CLAIRE WHITMORE.

Then:

SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Adrian placed his hand beside hers.

The system activated.

A map of the world appeared.

Thousands of red points.

Claire stared.

“These are all Halcyon operations.”

“Yes.”

She looked at her father.

“Can we destroy them?”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“You'll erase everything.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“Evidence too.”

Claire understood.

Destroying Meridian would free criminals who deserved punishment.

Keeping it would preserve a weapon no person should possess.

Then Victor's face appeared on the screen.

“You finally made it.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where are you?”

“Everywhere.”

The screens changed.

Victor had access to police stations.

Banks.

Military systems.

Hospitals.

“Give me the network,” he said.

“No.”

“You have no idea what you're refusing.”

“I know exactly.”

Victor smiled.

“Then I'll show you what happens when you say no.”

A hospital appeared on screen.

Power failure.

Patients in intensive care.

Another screen.

A bridge control system.

Then the Charleston harbor.

Victor was threatening the entire city.

Claire looked at her father.

“Can he do this?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she smiled.

“What?”

Adrian asked.

“I know how to beat him.”

She pulled out her phone.

“Mason.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“I remembered something.”

Before Mason died, he had whispered that Victor was afraid of someone.

Not Adrian.

Not her mother.

Someone else.

Claire searched through the records.

There.

MASON COLE: EMERGENCY CONTACT.

A number.

She called it.

A woman answered.

Claire froze.

She knew that voice.

Her former accountant.

The one Mason had fired.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

The woman sounded terrified.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I need your help.”

A pause.

Then:

“I've been waiting for this.”

Claire turned to Adrian.

“The system has a back door.”

Adrian stared.

“Can you access it?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

Claire's accountant began entering commands remotely.

One by one, Victor's systems disappeared.

Police communications returned.

Power came back.

Hospitals stabilized.

Victor's face vanished from the screens.

Claire exhaled.

“We did it.”

Then another message appeared.

YOU WON THE WAR.

BUT YOU LOST THE WOMAN.

Claire froze.

A camera feed appeared.

Her mother.

Alone.

In an underground room.

Victor stood behind her.

Then the screen went black.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“He took my mother.”

May you like

Adrian's eyes were cold.

“Then we take her back.”
