Chapter 15 - The Woman Waiting in the DarkSix months later, the city had changed.

Halcyon was no longer a secret.

Politicians resigned.

Executives were arrested.

Banks froze billions in stolen assets.

The Meridian Network had been dismantled.

Jonathan survived.

Barely.

He spent months recovering under federal protection.

Evelyn finally returned home.

For the first time in years, Claire ate breakfast with both parents.

But peace was never going to be simple.

Mason was dead.

Victor was dead.

Halcyon was broken.

Yet Adrian remained.

He stood on the balcony of Claire's mansion overlooking the harbor.

Claire walked toward him.

“You're leaving.”

He turned.

“Temporarily.”

“Why?”

“I have something to finish.”

She stopped.

“Your mother.”

He nodded.

“We found a location.”

“Where?”

“Europe.”

Claire stared at him.

“You're going alone?”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“Not this time.”

Adrian smiled.

“You don't have to follow me.”

“I know.”

She reached for his hand.

“I'm choosing to.”

He looked at her.

“You realize my life is dangerous.”

“So is mine.”

“You realize there are still people who want you dead.”

“They've been trying for years.”

Adrian laughed softly.

Claire squeezed his hand.

Then she looked toward the harbor.

“Do you remember the first night?”

“The club?”

“Yes.”

“You were terrified.”

“I was.”

“And now?”

Claire looked at him.

“Now I'm angry.”

Adrian smiled.

“That's better.”

She leaned closer.

“You never answered my question.”

“What question?”

“Why were you really watching me that night?”

He was silent.

“Adrian.”

He looked toward the water.

“Because your father asked me to protect you.”

Claire nodded.

“But that isn't the whole answer.”

“No.”

“What is?”

He met her eyes.

“I fell in love with you before you knew my name.”

Claire's breath caught.

“That sounds dangerously romantic for a man everyone calls the Black Wolf.”

“I have a reputation to protect.”

She laughed.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Claire answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then an elderly woman's voice.

“Claire Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“You don't know me.”

“Who are you?”

The woman whispered:

“I'm Sarah Voss.”

Adrian went still.

Claire put the phone on speaker.

Sarah continued.

“Your father told you the Meridian Network was his greatest creation.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

Sarah laughed softly.

“He lied.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“About what?”

“About who really killed Jonathan.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“My father is alive.”

“I know.”

“Then who?”

Sarah's voice turned cold.

“The man standing beside you.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

He didn't move.

“That's impossible.”

Sarah continued.

“Ask him what happened in the hangar before the crash.”

Claire's voice trembled.

“Adrian?”

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“She's telling the truth.”

Claire stepped backward.

“What?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I didn't kill your father.”

Sarah interrupted.

“You didn't.”

Claire exhaled.

Then Sarah said:

“But you delivered him to the person who did.”

Silence.

Adrian's face collapsed.

Claire stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Sarah whispered:

“It means your father's enemy was never Halcyon.”

“Then who?”

Sarah paused.

“The government.”

The call ended.

Claire stood frozen.

Adrian reached for her hand.

She pulled away.

For the first time since the night at the club, she saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear that she would never trust him again.

Then Claire's phone lit up.

A text message appeared.

ONE LAST SECRET.

COME ALONE.

Under it was an address.

The old airport hangar.

The same place where everything had begun.

Claire looked at Adrian.

He stepped toward her.

“Don't go.”

She stared.

“Why?”

“Because this time…”

His voice broke.

“…I don't think they want to kill you.”

Claire looked at the address.

“Then what do they want?”

Adrian swallowed.

“You.”

The harbor wind moved through the balcony.

Somewhere in the distance, a church bell rang.

And Claire Whitmore realized the terrible truth.

The war was never over.

It had only been waiting for her to become powerful enough to fight it.

She slipped the phone into her pocket.

Then looked at Adrian.

“I’m going.”

He nodded.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

Claire's voice was calm.

“This time, Adrian, I need to know whether I'm walking into the trap…”

She stepped toward the balcony doors.

“…or whether you're the trap.”

Behind her, Adrian said nothing.

And for the first time, the Black Wolf had no answer.

Because somewhere across Charleston, a woman who had supposedly died twenty-three years ago was watching them through a telescope.

Sarah Voss lowered it slowly.

Beside her stood a man Claire had never seen before.

He placed a black envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

Claire.

Adrian.

And a child neither of them had ever met.

On the back were four words:

SHE IS YOURS, ADRIAN.

Sarah smiled.

May you like

“The real game begins now.”

And the photograph burned to ash in the fireplace.
