Chapter 6 - The Name Beneath the SealThe old chapel stood beyond the estate gates, hidden behind rows of cypress trees.

No one used it anymore.
At least, that was what Alessandra had been told.
She entered before dawn.
Elias carried a flashlight.
Caleb slept against her chest.
The crypt was beneath the altar.
There was a stone door with a brass seal.
Alessandra pressed the black key into it.
The door opened.
Inside were dozens of sealed boxes.
Family records.
Birth certificates.
Trust agreements.
Death certificates.
And one large red folder.
Original Succession Charter.
Elias reached for it.
Alessandra stopped him.
“Wait.”
She opened the first page.
The language was old.
The succession passed to the eldest living male descendant of the direct Orsini line.
But there was a second clause.
If the heir was intentionally hidden, declared dead, or medically neglected to alter succession, the conspirators would be permanently disqualified.
Alessandra looked at Elias.
“So you're the heir.”
Elias shook his head.
“Unless there's another clause.”
There was.
Page fourteen.
The eldest living male descendant must be publicly acknowledged before the family council.
Alessandra smiled bitterly.
“That can be arranged.”
Then she noticed something else.
A handwritten note from her father.
The original records have been altered.
Find the birth register.
She searched the box.
Nothing.
Another document.
A list of payments made to a private clinic.
One recipient was Francesca.
Another was Vincent.
The dates matched Elias's medical records.
Someone had paid the clinic to falsify his death.
Alessandra's hands trembled.
Then a third name appeared.
Bianca.
She stared.
“Why would Bianca be involved?”
Elias took the paper.
“I don't know.”
Caleb stirred.
“Mommy.”
“I'm here.”
He pointed toward the back of the crypt.
“There's another box.”
Alessandra followed his finger.
A narrow wooden box sat behind a stone pillar.
She opened it.
Inside was a small cassette recorder.
And a letter.
For Alessandra.
She recognized her father's handwriting.
She pressed play.
Static.
Then his voice.
“If you are hearing this, they have already lied to you about me.”
Alessandra closed her eyes.
“I discovered Elias's identity and the financial theft. But the greatest danger is not Francesca.”
A pause.
“It is the person everyone believes is too loyal to betray the family.”
The tape clicked.
Then her father's voice continued:
“Watch Vincent's wife.”
Alessandra looked toward Elias.
“Bianca.”
The tape ended.
Neither spoke.
Then they heard footsteps in the chapel.
Someone entered the crypt.
Alessandra extinguished the flashlight.
The footsteps came closer.
A woman's whisper echoed through the darkness.
“I know you're here.”
Bianca.
Elias reached for Alessandra's arm.
Bianca stepped into view.
She wasn't holding a weapon.
She was holding a photograph.
“I can explain.”
Alessandra stood.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Bianca looked at Caleb.
“I never wanted him hurt.”
“Then why did you slap me?”
“To stop you from taking him.”
“Why?”
“Because they were watching me.”
Elias frowned.
“Who?”
Bianca looked around.
Then she whispered:
“Everyone thinks Vincent is controlling this family.”
She shook her head.
“He isn't.”
Alessandra's eyes narrowed.
“Then who is?”
Bianca handed her the photograph.
It showed Francesca meeting a stranger.
A man in his thirties.
A man Alessandra had never seen before.
On the back was a date.
Eleven years ago.
The same week Elias was declared dead.
Bianca whispered:
“That man is the real architect.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the chapel entrance.
Then she said:
“Your father.”
Alessandra stared at the photograph.
“That isn't possible.”

Bianca's eyes filled with fear.
“Then ask yourself why his signature appears on every payment.”
