Chapter 10 - The Boy Who Remembered EverythingVincent stumbled backward.

“That isn't what he heard.”
Alessandra stood.
“Then tell me what he heard.”
“He's four.”
“Exactly.”
Vincent's voice cracked.
“Children misunderstand things.”
Caleb tightened his grip on his mother's dress.
“Daddy said Mason needed the chair.”
Mason started shaking.
“I didn't know.”
Alessandra looked at him.
“You don't have to explain.”
The boy began crying.
“I thought we were playing.”
Bianca looked at Vincent in horror.
“You told Mason to do it?”
“I never told him to hurt Caleb.”
“But you told him to scare him.”
Vincent said nothing.
That was enough.
The council erupted.
Francesca shouted for silence.
No one listened.
One of the elders slammed his cane onto the floor.
“You concealed Elias.”
Another pointed at Vincent.
“You falsified the succession records.”
A third demanded a review of the trust.
Alessandra stood in the center.
For the first time in her life, she realized something.
Her family didn't fear violence.
They feared documents.
Records.
Witnesses.
Proof.
So she raised the DNA report.
“We're doing this publicly.”
Francesca stared at her.
“You would destroy the family.”
Alessandra answered quietly.
“You destroyed it the night you tied my son to that chair.”
She turned to the guards.
“Take Caleb and Elias somewhere safe.”
Then the lights went out.
Again.
A crash sounded from the corridor.
The council fell silent.
When the emergency lights returned, Adrian was gone.
The black ledger was gone.
And Caleb was gone.
Alessandra screamed.
“CALEB!”
The guards rushed into the hall.
Doors were locked.
Windows sealed.
No one had seen anyone leave.
Then Mason pointed toward the old service elevator.
“He took him down there.”
“Who?”
Mason's face had gone white.
“The man with the scar.”
Adrian.
Alessandra ran.
The elevator doors were closing.
She forced them open.
Inside was a single bloodless clue.
Caleb's wooden toy airplane.
The elevator descended.
Floor 1.
Floor B1.
Floor B2.
Then stopped at B3.
The family estate had only two basement levels.
Alessandra looked at Elias.
“What is B3?”
He whispered:
“A place that isn't supposed to exist.”
She forced open the doors.
A corridor stretched into darkness.
At the far end was a steel door.
It opened from the inside.
A speaker clicked.
Adrian's voice.
“Come alone.”
Alessandra stepped forward.
Elias grabbed her arm.
“Don't.”
“My son is in there.”
“You walk in, you may not walk out.”
Alessandra looked toward the dark corridor.
Then she heard Caleb crying.
“Mommy!”
She pulled free.
“I don't care.”
She stepped through the door.
The door slammed shut behind her.
A light switched on.
Caleb sat in a chair.
Across from him was a man with gray hair.
Not Adrian.
Not Vincent.
Not Francesca.
A man Alessandra had seen only once before.
In her father's funeral photograph.
Her father had written a note beneath the picture.
The only man I trusted.
The stranger smiled.
“Hello, Alessandra.”
She froze.
“Who are you?”
He stood.
“My name is Gabriel Orsini.”
Caleb looked up.
And whispered:
“Mommy… that's Grandpa.”
Alessandra's world stopped.
May you like
Because the man standing before her had the face of her father.
And her father had been dead for eleven years.
