Chapter 5 - The Heir Who Was Never DeadAlessandra ran.

She pulled Caleb toward the hidden passage while Elias climbed through the ventilation shaft.
Another shot hit the wall.
Dust filled the corridor.
“Move!”
Her guards rushed into the basement.
Gunfire erupted behind them.
Caleb screamed into her shoulder.
Alessandra covered his ears.
They reached the main stairs.
A guard grabbed Elias and pulled him through.
Vincent stood at the bottom.
His face was expressionless.
“Give me the boy.”
Alessandra stopped.
“Which one?”
Vincent's eyes shifted toward Elias.
Elias stepped behind her.
“You're not touching him.”
“He belongs to this family.”
“No,” Elias said quietly.
“You decided that eleven years ago.”
Vincent's jaw tightened.
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“You signed the paper.”
A strange silence followed.
Then Francesca appeared.
She descended the stairs slowly.
“Enough.”
Everyone stopped.
Francesca looked at Elias.
For the first time, Alessandra saw something in her mother's face she had never seen before.
Regret.
Or perhaps fear of consequences.
Elias spoke first.
“You told them I died.”
Francesca's voice trembled.
“You were sick.”
“I was treatable.”
“You were dangerous.”
“I was your son.”
She looked away.
Alessandra stepped forward.
“And Caleb?”
Francesca looked at her.
“What about him?”
“You let him suffer because you wanted Mason protected.”
Francesca said nothing.
Alessandra understood.
This had never been about children.
It had been about inheritance.
Control.
Power.
Every decision had been made for a throne nobody had the right to own.
Then Elias said:
“The ledger is gone.”
Everyone froze.
Vincent looked at Francesca.
“What?”
Elias smiled faintly.
“I moved it.”
Francesca's face went white.
“Where?”
“Somewhere you can't reach.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“Tell me.”
Elias shook his head.
“I already told someone.”
“Who?”
Elias looked at Alessandra.
Her stomach dropped.
“You gave it to me?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I gave it to Caleb.”
Alessandra looked at her son.
The little boy slowly opened his fist.
Inside was a tiny black key.
Francesca whispered:
“No.”
Alessandra recognized it immediately.
It was the same key from the hidden camera.
But it was different.
This one had an engraving.
Her father's room number.
Francesca backed away.
“Where did you get that?”
Caleb looked at her.
“You dropped it.”
“When?”
“Before dinner.”
Alessandra's mind raced.
Someone had planned all of this.
Maybe her father.
Maybe Elias.
Maybe someone else.
Then Caleb said:
“It opens Grandpa's box.”
Vincent lunged.
Alessandra stepped between them.
Her guards raised their weapons.
Vincent stopped.
Francesca shouted:
“Lower them!”
Alessandra didn't.
She picked up Caleb.
“Tonight you tied him to a chair.”
She looked at each of them.
“From this moment on, nobody in this family gets near him without my permission.”
Francesca's voice turned cold.
“You think you can overthrow me?”
“No.”
Alessandra looked at the black key.
“I think you already did that yourself.”
She turned and walked out.
Behind her, Elias followed.
Vincent watched them disappear.
Francesca whispered:
“Where is the box?”
Vincent didn't answer.
Then Bianca walked forward with a pale face.
“I know.”
Francesca turned.
“Where?”
Bianca swallowed.
“The chapel.”
Everyone stared at her.
“The old chapel has a crypt.”
Vincent frowned.
“What's in it?”
Bianca looked toward the door Alessandra had just passed through.
Then she said:
“The original succession documents.”
Francesca's expression collapsed.
And for the first time, everyone understood.
