CHAPTER 7: The Hidden Chamber

The first gunshot shattered the silence.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Bullets ripped through the stone wall where Ethan and the others had been hiding.
"Move!" Ethan shouted.
Everyone scattered in different directions as fragments of old masonry exploded into the air.
The construction workers pulled Carla and Ethan's parents behind a line of abandoned gravestones while Father Gabriel remained on his knees in the middle of the courtyard, still surrounded by armed men.
Rain poured harder.
Within seconds, everyone was soaked.
The man in the black raincoat raised a hand.
"Hold your fire!"
The shooting stopped almost immediately.
He stared into the darkness where Ethan was hiding.
"Mr. Santos..."
"I don't want you."
"I want the key."
Ethan remained silent.
The stranger continued.
"Give me the key, and your parents leave alive."
Before Ethan could answer, Miguel laughed.
"You still don't understand him."
The stranger glanced sideways.
"What?"
"He won't trade his family."
"He'll risk everything first."
For the first time that night, the two men looked less like allies and more like enemies forced into the same battlefield.
Ethan whispered to Carla.
"Take my parents down the back trail."
"What about you?"
"I'm ending this."
His father grabbed his arm.
"No."
"You don't know what's inside that chamber."
Father Gabriel suddenly shouted across the courtyard.
"Ethan!"
Everyone turned toward the priest.
"If your grandfather trusted you..."
"...don't let either of them open it."
The stranger struck the priest across the face with the butt of his pistol.
"Enough!"
Blood trickled from Father Gabriel's forehead.
Yet he smiled.
Miguel's patience snapped.
He drew a handgun from beneath his coat and pointed it at the man in black.
"I warned you."
"No one touches him."
The stranger slowly turned.
"You would shoot me?"
Miguel answered without hesitation.
"If I have to."
For one heartbeat...
The entire courtyard stood frozen.
Then both sides raised their weapons.
Dozens of rifles.
Pistols.
Shotguns.
Pointed at one another.
Neither side trusted the other anymore.
Ethan realized this was their only chance.
He looked at the brass key shaped like a church bell.
Then toward the chapel's weathered entrance.
"If the chamber exists..."
"...there has to be another way in."
Father Gabriel caught Ethan's eye.
Almost imperceptibly, the old priest tilted his head toward the rear of the chapel.
A signal.
Keeping low behind broken tombstones, Ethan, Carla, and two construction workers slipped away while Miguel and the mysterious stranger argued in the courtyard.
The rear of the chapel was nearly swallowed by vines.
Lightning illuminated the cracked stone walls.
"There!" Carla whispered.
Half-hidden beneath ivy was an ancient bronze bell mounted into the wall.
Except...
There was no bell.
Only the stone frame remained.
Ethan remembered the letter.
"The proof is hidden where the bell never rings."
He searched the wall with his hands.
Nothing.
Then his fingers brushed against a tiny keyhole concealed inside a carved cross.
His heart raced.
"This is it."
He inserted the brass key.
For a second...
Nothing happened.
Then...
CLICK.
A deep rumble echoed beneath the chapel.
Stone scraped against stone.
A section of the floor beside the rear wall slowly shifted aside, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Cold air rushed upward.
Air that smelled of damp earth and ancient paper.
Carla shined her flashlight downward.
"I don't think anyone's been down there in years."
Above them, shouting erupted.
One of the guards had spotted the moving stone.
"They found it!"
The courtyard exploded into chaos.
Gunfire echoed again.
Miguel screamed,
"Stop them!"
The mysterious man shouted,
"Kill everyone!"
Ethan looked at Carla.
"Go!"
They rushed down the staircase.
The hidden door began closing automatically behind them.
A bodyguard lunged forward, diving for the opening.
His fingers barely slipped through before the stone slammed shut.
A horrifying scream echoed outside.
Then silence.
Darkness surrounded them.
Only Carla's flashlight cut through the black.
The tunnel stretched deeper beneath the chapel.
Its walls were reinforced with old bricks.
Someone had built this deliberately.
Several minutes later, they reached a massive iron door.
Unlike everything else in the tunnel, it looked surprisingly modern.
Etched across its surface was the Santos family crest.
Beneath it, engraved in steel, were six words:
THE TRUTH OUTLIVES EVERY LIE.
Ethan pushed.
The door slowly opened.
Inside lay a room unlike anything they expected.
Shelves filled with carefully preserved ledgers.
Boxes labeled with years.
Photographs.
Audio tapes.
Legal documents.
Everything perfectly organized.
In the center stood a large wooden desk.
On top rested an old film projector.
Beside it...
A single videotape.
A handwritten label read:
PLAY THIS FIRST.
Carla found an old television and VCR connected to a dusty generator.
Amazingly...
The equipment still worked.
The screen flickered to life.
Static.
Then an image appeared.
An elderly man sat before the camera.
Ethan's grandfather.
He looked directly into the lens.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then our family has already broken apart."
He paused for several seconds.
"I pray Miguel never forced you to come here."
Ethan leaned closer.
His grandfather continued.
"There is something you must know."
"Miguel is not my biological grandson."
"But..."
"He is also not your enemy."
Ethan froze.
Carla stared at the screen.
"What?"
The old man sighed deeply.
"The real enemy..."
"...is the man who has controlled Miguel since he was twelve years old."
Suddenly...
A deafening explosion shook the underground chamber.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
The lights flickered violently.
Someone had found another way inside.
May you like
The heavy iron door slowly began to open from the outside.
