CHAPTER 12: The True Heir

The ancient platform groaned as it completed its first rotation.

Stone grated against stone.

Rain streamed over weathered carvings that had not seen daylight for generations.

Then...

CLICK.

Every stone statue raised its crossbow.

Dozens of razor-sharp bolts pointed toward the soldiers, Ethan, Adrian, and everyone else on the hillside.

Nobody moved.

Not even the wind seemed willing to disturb the silence.

Colonel Reyes slowly raised one hand.

"Open fire!"

A squad of soldiers aimed their rifles.

Father Gabriel shouted,

"NO!"

Too late.

A burst of gunfire erupted.

Bullets struck the stone statues...

...and did absolutely nothing.

The statues answered instantly.

A storm of crossbow bolts shot across the hillside.

The soldiers had no time to react.

Within seconds, half a dozen men were knocked to the ground, screaming in pain as the heavy bolts pierced their body armor.

The remaining troops scattered in panic.

Adrian didn't flinch.

Instead, he studied the mechanism with fascination.

"A remarkable defense system."

He turned to Ethan.

"Your grandfather never built this."

Father Gabriel shook his head.

"No."

"It existed centuries before the chapel."

"The priests only protected it."

Another grinding sound echoed beneath the platform.

The inscription changed.

New words slowly emerged from the stone.

THE FALSE HEIR SHALL FALL.

Miguel, barely conscious on the ground, forced his eyes open.

His gaze landed on the pedestal.

Then on Adrian.

His face turned pale.

"Don't..."

"...touch it..."

Adrian smiled.

"I've waited thirty years."

He stepped onto the platform.

Nothing happened.

He took another step.

Still nothing.

He looked back triumphantly.

"You see?"

"There are no curses."

He reached toward the black wooden box.

His fingertips stopped just centimeters away.

CLICK.

A hidden blade shot out of the pedestal.

Adrian jerked backward.

Too slow.

The blade sliced across his palm.

Blood splashed onto the ancient stone.

For a heartbeat...

Nothing happened.

Then the entire platform began to glow.

A deep mechanical voice echoed from somewhere beneath the mountain.

Not electronic.

Not human.

Ancient.

BLOOD REJECTED.

The statues immediately turned.

Every crossbow aimed directly at Adrian.

His confident smile vanished.

"Move!"

He dove sideways as dozens of bolts erupted simultaneously.

The pedestal shattered behind him.

Stone exploded into the air.

His overcoat was ripped apart by flying fragments.

For the first time since Ethan had met him...

Adrian looked terrified.

Father Gabriel slowly stood.

"The mountain has judged."

Adrian glared at the priest.

"It's only a machine!"

"No."

The old priest answered quietly.

"It's a test."

Ethan stared at the black wooden box.

Despite the shattered pedestal...

The box hadn't moved.

Not even an inch.

It remained perfectly intact.

Waiting.

Carla suddenly noticed something.

"Ethan..."

She pointed toward the carvings surrounding the platform.

The symbols formed a circle.

At four positions were engraved names.

The first had long faded away.

The second read:

ISABEL SANTOS.

Ethan's grandmother.

The third:

DANIEL SANTOS.

His grandfather.

The fourth...

...was empty.

No name.

Just a smooth section of stone.

Father Gabriel's eyes widened.

"The final heir..."

"...was never chosen."

Adrian immediately understood.

He slowly smiled again.

"So that's the final lock."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"It was always you."

Before Ethan could answer...

Miguel struggled to his feet.

Every movement clearly caused unbearable pain.

He staggered toward the platform.

"Stop..."

Adrian laughed.

"You're dying."

Miguel ignored him.

Instead, he reached into the inside pocket of his ruined suit.

Everyone watched silently.

He pulled out...

...a faded photograph.

The same one Ethan remembered from childhood.

The two brothers fishing beside a river.

Miguel smiled weakly.

"I kept this..."

"...all these years."

Ethan felt his throat tighten.

"You could've destroyed it."

"I almost did."

Miguel looked down.

"But I never could."

Suddenly, Miguel turned toward Adrian.

"I know what you're really after."

Adrian's expression froze.

"So..."

"Victor told you."

Miguel nodded.

"He finally admitted everything."

The rain grew heavier.

Miguel looked at Ethan.

"The box..."

"...doesn't contain money."

"It doesn't contain gold."

"It contains..."

A violent cough interrupted him.

Blood stained his shirt.

Ethan rushed to support him.

"What does it contain?"

Miguel whispered into Ethan's ear.

Only six words.

Ethan's eyes widened in disbelief.

"No..."

Miguel gave a faint nod.

"Now you understand."

Adrian's calm facade finally cracked.

"What did he tell you?"

Neither brother answered.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Tell me."

Silence.

"Tell me!"

His voice echoed across the hillside.

Then...

The black wooden box moved.

On its own.

Its lid slowly opened.

A brilliant golden light spilled into the rain.

Everyone instinctively shielded their eyes.

The statues lowered their weapons.

The mountain became silent.

Inside the box rested a single leather-bound journal.

Nothing more.

No jewels.

No treasure.

Just a journal.

Adrian stared at it in confusion.

"That's impossible..."

Father Gabriel smiled through tears.

"Of course."

"The greatest weapon..."

"...was never wealth."

Ethan slowly reached toward the journal.

This time...

The platform did not react.

The glowing inscription changed one final time.

THE HEIR HAS RETURNED.

As Ethan lifted the journal from the box, a folded document slipped from between its pages and fell into the mud.

Carla picked it up.

Her face went white.

"Ethan..."

"You need to see this."

He unfolded the rain-soaked paper.

At the top, in official government format, were the words:

CERTIFICATE OF ADOPTION

Below it...

The child's name.

ETHAN SANTOS.

Not Miguel.

Him.

The man who believed he had always belonged to the Santos family...

May you like

...had been adopted too.
