CHAPTER 14: The Journal of Truth

The mountainside erupted into chaos.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Dozens of ancient crossbow bolts streaked through the rain.

Colonel Reyes dove behind a military truck, but three bolts struck the vehicle's engine, sending steam billowing into the air.

Adrian rolled across the stone platform with astonishing speed for a man his age.

Several bolts slammed into the ground where he had been standing only a heartbeat earlier.

The soldiers broke ranks.

Some fled downhill.

Others fired wildly at the statues.

It made no difference.

The ancient guardians continued moving with relentless precision.

"Ethan!"

Father Gabriel shouted.

"The journal!"

Ethan looked down at the leather-bound book still in his hands.

Its cover was cracked with age.

Embossed in faded gold were just three words:

The Final Testament

He opened the first page.

Inside, in his grandfather's familiar handwriting, was a single sentence:

The greatest inheritance is not land, money, or blood. It is the truth.

Beneath it lay a folded envelope.

Addressed simply:

To My Family

Before Ethan could unfold it, Adrian's voice cut through the chaos.

"Don't read it!"

He had taken cover behind a fallen stone pillar, a pistol still clutched in his hand.

"You think that journal will save you?"

"It won't."

"It will destroy every one of you."

Miguel, weak but conscious, laughed bitterly.

"You said the same thing..."

"...about every truth you've ever hidden."

Ethan unfolded the letter.

Rain blurred the edges, but the ink remained surprisingly clear.

If you are reading this, then my time has ended, and our family stands at the edge of a choice.

You may seek revenge.

Or you may end the cycle that has poisoned generations.

Do not confuse justice with vengeance.

One heals. The other only creates another Victor.

Ethan paused.

His grandfather's final words felt heavier than any treasure.

He turned the page.

Attached behind the letter was a thin leather pocket.

Inside was a flash drive.

Carla blinked.

"A flash drive?"

Father Gabriel smiled faintly.

"Your grandfather updated the archive shortly before he died."

"He knew paper could burn."

"So he made copies."

Adrian's face went pale.

"No..."

Carla plugged the flash drive into her rugged field laptop, which had miraculously survived the night's chaos.

The screen lit up.

Hundreds of folders appeared.

Financial records.

Secret recordings.

Photographs.

Government contracts.

Offshore accounts.

Video confessions.

Every file meticulously labeled.

At the top was one folder titled:

PHOENIX: COMPLETE NETWORK

Carla opened it.

The first document listed over three hundred names.

Judges.

Business executives.

Police commanders.

Military officers.

Cabinet officials.

Each linked by payments, coded messages, and shell companies.

Colonel Reyes stared at the screen in horror.

"You copied everything..."

Father Gabriel nodded.

"Daniel Santos trusted paper."

"Then he learned to trust technology too."

Adrian slowly lowered his weapon.

For the first time, defeat flickered across his face.

"You don't understand."

"If those files become public..."

"The country will fall into chaos."

Ethan looked directly at him.

"No."

"The lies will."

Miguel struggled to stand beside Ethan.

His wounds had left him pale, but his voice was steady.

"I spent half my life believing fear could protect people."

He looked at Adrian.

"You taught me that."

"You were wrong."

Adrian said nothing.

A military helicopter suddenly appeared over the valley.

Then another.

Then three more.

Unlike the first helicopter, these carried national markings.

Their loudspeakers echoed across the mountains.

"This is the National Bureau of Investigation."

"Lay down your weapons immediately."

Colonel Reyes looked toward Adrian.

"What do we do?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time in decades...

He had no answer.

The remaining soldiers slowly lowered their rifles.

Several stepped away from Colonel Reyes.

Others removed the black phoenix patches hidden beneath their uniforms.

The network was breaking apart before his eyes.

Ethan walked toward Adrian.

There was only a few steps between them now.

"So this is how it ends."

Adrian gave a tired smile.

"No."

"It ends when you decide what kind of man you become."

He looked briefly at Miguel.

"He's already made his choice."

Miguel lowered his head.

Suddenly, a sharp electronic beep echoed from somewhere beneath the platform.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Father Gabriel's expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Carla looked around frantically.

"What is that?"

The priest whispered,

"The emergency demolition system..."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"I never activated it."

Colonel Reyes looked equally confused.

"Neither did I."

The beeping grew faster.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Miguel stared toward the shattered pedestal.

His face drained of color.

"There was..."

"...one last failsafe."

Everyone turned toward him.

He whispered:

"Victor."

At that exact moment, a hidden speaker buried beneath the ancient platform crackled to life.

Victor Salazar's recorded voice echoed across the mountain.

"If you're hearing this... then I have already lost."

"And if I cannot have the archive... no one will."

The countdown accelerated.

00:59...

00:58...

00:57...

The entire mountain began to tremble.
