CHAPTER 11: The Man From the Helicopter

The helicopter blades churned the rain into a swirling gray storm.
Dust, mud, and torn pages from PROJECT PHOENIX spiraled through the air like ghosts refusing to disappear.
Every soldier stood at attention.
Even Colonel Reyes lowered his head in respect.
The man who stepped off the rope ladder wore no military insignia.
No rank.
No name tag.
Just a dark overcoat despite the pouring rain.
He looked to be in his early sixties, with silver hair and calm eyes that revealed almost nothing.
He smiled politely at Ethan.
"Mr. Santos..."
"I believe you're holding something that belongs to my organization."
Ethan tightened his grip on the red folder.
"I don't think it belongs to anyone anymore."
The stranger's smile widened.
"A brave answer."
He extended his hand.
"My name is Adrian Cortez."
"I represent people who prefer not to appear in newspapers."
Father Gabriel whispered under his breath,
"I know that name..."
Ethan glanced at the priest.
"You do?"
The old priest's face turned pale.
"Twenty years ago..."
"He visited your grandfather."
"He offered to buy this land."
"For any price."
Adrian nodded approvingly.
"Your memory is impressive, Father."
"I did make an offer."
"And your grandfather refused."
"He said some things couldn't be sold."
Adrian sighed.
"He was right."
His expression suddenly hardened.
"So we had to find another way."
Ethan looked from Adrian to Colonel Reyes.
Then at the scattered pages.
A realization struck him.
"You weren't working for Victor."
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"Victor worked for us."
The hillside fell silent.
Even Miguel, barely conscious, forced his eyes open.
"No..."
He whispered.
"That's impossible..."
Adrian crouched beside him.
"You always believed you were important."
"You were useful."
"There's a difference."
Miguel laughed weakly despite the blood on his lips.
"So..."
"...I was just another pawn."
Adrian stood again.
"You all were."
He turned toward Ethan.
"Your brother separated your family."
"Victor built the network."
"Colonel Reyes protected it."
"And your grandfather..."
"He documented everything."
"Every one of you played your role."
Carla stepped forward.
"What is PROJECT PHOENIX?"
Adrian looked at her.
Then laughed softly.
"It was never a project."
"It was a promise."
"What promise?"
"That no government..."
"No court..."
"And no family..."
"...would ever control what lies beneath this province."
Ethan frowned.
"You mean the rare earth minerals?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Those?"
"They're valuable."
"But not valuable enough."
He pointed toward the collapsed chapel.
"What's beneath that mountain..."
"...changes everything."
Father Gabriel's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"You swore you'd never touch it."
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"I swore many things."
The priest looked at Ethan desperately.
"Don't let him reach the second chamber."
Ethan blinked.
"Second chamber?"
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"So..."
"You never found it."
Colonel Reyes immediately barked orders.
"Search the hillside!"
"Find the entrance!"
Dozens of soldiers spread out across the collapsed mountain.
Using metal detectors.
Ground scanners.
Even drones.
They weren't looking for survivors.
They were searching for something hidden even deeper than the archive.
Miguel grabbed Ethan's sleeve again.
His voice was barely audible.
"There are..."
"...two keys..."
Ethan leaned closer.
"What?"
"The bell key..."
"...opens the archive."
"The second..."
Miguel coughed violently.
"...opens..."
Before he could finish...
His eyes rolled back.
He lost consciousness.
A medic rushed toward him.
Adrian raised one finger.
"No treatment."
The medic froze.
Ethan stepped between them.
"He's dying."
Adrian answered calmly.
"Then let him."
Ethan's fists clenched.
Without warning he punched Adrian across the face.
The soldiers instantly aimed their rifles.
Father Gabriel shouted,
"Don't!"
Adrian slowly touched the corner of his mouth.
A drop of blood.
Then...
He laughed.
For nearly ten seconds.
A genuine laugh.
"You really are your grandfather's grandson."
Suddenly, one of the drones beeped loudly.
An operator shouted,
"Sir!"
"We found a cavity!"
Everyone turned toward the northern slope.
The scanner displayed a massive hollow space beneath the mountain.
Far larger than the archive chamber.
Adrian smiled.
"There it is."
Before anyone could move...
The ground trembled again.
A low rumble echoed beneath everyone's feet.
Cracks spread rapidly across the hillside.
The drone operator stumbled backward.
"Sir..."
"Something's moving underground."
Then...
A section of earth collapsed inward.
Not from an explosion.
From machinery.
Ancient machinery.
A gigantic circular stone platform slowly rose from beneath the mountain.
Covered in moss.
Carved with symbols older than the chapel itself.
At its center stood a bronze pedestal.
And resting on that pedestal...
A small black wooden box.
Untouched by time.
Father Gabriel fell to his knees.
"My God..."
Adrian whispered almost reverently,
"After thirty years..."
"...we finally found it."
Ethan stared at the box.
It looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
"What is it?"
Adrian answered without taking his eyes off it.
"The reason your family was destroyed."
He took one step toward the platform.
Then another.
But just before his foot touched the ancient stone...
A mechanical click echoed beneath the pedestal.
Father Gabriel's eyes widened in horror.
"No one move!"
Too late.
The platform began rotating.
Deep within the mountain, gears that had slept for generations roared to life.
From hidden openings around the circle...
Dozens of armed stone statues slowly emerged, raising ancient crossbows toward everyone on the hillside.
And carved into the pedestal, glowing faintly beneath the rain, appeared a warning no one had seen before:
May you like
ONLY THE TRUE HEIR MAY TAKE WHAT IS INSIDE.
