Chapter 7 - They escaped through an underground service tunnel beneath the garage.

Victor insisted he had never known about it.
Daniel didn't believe him.
Neither did Graham.
For fifteen minutes, they moved through darkness beneath the estate grounds.
Maisie held Graham's hand.
She didn't cry.
That frightened him more than tears would have.
Children should cry when their world collapses.
Instead, she watched.
Listening.
Remembering.
At the tunnel exit, Daniel stopped.
“Three cars outside.”
Graham looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Security cameras.”
“You installed cameras?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Graham stared.
“Why?”
Daniel looked away.
“Your wife paid me.”
They reached an abandoned storage building.
Daniel opened the door.
Inside was a table, several monitors, medical kits, bottled water, and a wall covered with photographs.
Graham stepped closer.
His photograph was on the wall.
Maisie's.
Claire's.
Sloane's.
Evelyn's.
Victor's.
Then dozens of others.
Children.
Families.
Dates.
Graham felt sick.
“How long have you been watching them?”
“Watching the network.”
Daniel pointed at a map.
“They operate through six institutions.”
“Northvale is one.”
“Yes.”
“Who runs them?”
Daniel drew a circle around three names.
Evelyn Harper.
Dr. Bennett Mercer.
Victor Hale.
Graham looked at Victor.
Victor's face was pale.
“I told you.”
“I believed you.”
“I was forced into it.”
“By whom?”
Victor stared at the floor.
“Your father.”
Graham froze.
“My father is dead.”
“So is Claire.”
Victor lifted his eyes.
“Dead doesn't mean disconnected.”
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Graham demanded:
“What does my father have to do with Northvale?”
Victor walked to the wall.
“There was an arrangement.”
“What arrangement?”
“Your father founded a trust.”
Graham stared.
“My father ran a shipping company.”
“He ran more than that.”
Victor pointed at the documents.
“The trust invested in private treatment centers. Northvale became one of the beneficiaries.”
Graham felt numb.
“Why?”
“To control certain family estates.”
“And my family?”
Victor took a breath.
“Your father's will included a hidden clause.”
Graham's eyes narrowed.
“What clause?”
“The Grant bloodline.”
Silence.
Daniel spoke.
“Tell him.”
Victor nodded.
“If any direct Grant heir is deemed legally incompetent before the age of eighteen, a trustee assumes control of all family assets placed under the legacy trust.”
Graham understood.
“Maisie.”
“Yes.”
“That's why Claire was killed.”
Victor looked at him.
“She discovered the clause and tried to move Maisie's assets outside the trust.”
Graham stared.
“And Sloane?”
“She was supposed to marry you.”
“Why?”
“So she would control the household.”
“And if Maisie was removed?”
Victor didn't answer.
Graham already knew.
Sloane would become the only person between Graham and his own fortune.
But something still didn't fit.
“Why now?”
Victor looked at him.
“Because you changed your will.”
Graham blinked.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
He remembered.
He had changed his estate plan after a health scare.
Graham Grant Family Trust.
Maisie the sole beneficiary.
Sloane received nothing if Maisie survived.
Graham stared at the floor.
Sloane wasn't marrying him for money.
She was marrying him for access to Maisie's inheritance.
Daniel looked at his watch.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“Northvale's transport team is heading here.”
“How?”
Daniel pointed at the monitors.
“They have a warrant.”
Graham's heart sank.
“A real warrant?”
Daniel nodded.
“Signed by a judge.”
Graham stared.
“How?”
Victor whispered:
“Because the documents saying Maisie is dangerous are already in the system.”
Graham's hands curled into fists.
They had built a legal cage.
He didn't have to be guilty.
He only had to look unstable enough to lose his child.
Then the monitor beeped.
A new video feed opened.
Sloane appeared.
She was sitting in a quiet room.
Her wedding gown was gone.
She wore a black dress.
Beside her was Maisie's stuffed rabbit.
Sloane looked directly into the camera.
“Graham.”
He stepped closer.
“She wants you to come home.”
Graham's jaw tightened.
“You're finished.”
Sloane smiled.
“Perhaps.”
She lifted the rabbit.
“But you still don't know what Claire hid.”
She cut open the rabbit's head.
A tiny metal object fell onto the table.
Sloane picked it up.
“Your wife didn't just leave a message.”
She held the object to the camera.
“She left proof.”
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
“That's a storage key.”
Graham looked at him.
“For what?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“A secure account.”
“Whose?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Claire's.”
The video ended.
Then Sloane sent one final message.
COME HOME ALONE.
Graham looked at Maisie.
She whispered:
“Daddy, don't go.”
Graham pulled her closer.
“I won't.”
Then Daniel pointed at the door.
Someone had entered the building.
A slow knock echoed through the storage room.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three more.
May you like
Victor whispered:
“They found us.”
