Chapter 15 - The room went silent.

Graham looked at Maisie.
Then at Sloane.
“What did you say?”
Sloane swallowed.
“Maisie isn't Claire's biological daughter.”
Graham shook his head.
“No.”
“You deserve the truth.”
“You've lied about everything.”
“This is the one thing I never lied about.”
Graham turned to Daniel.
“Is it true?”
Daniel didn't answer.
That was enough.
Graham's voice cracked.
“Tell me.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Claire gave birth to Maisie.”
Graham exhaled.
“So she is her mother.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you talking about?”
Sloane looked at Graham.
“Claire gave birth to twins.”
Graham stopped.
“What?”
“Maisie had a twin sister.”
The room tilted.
Graham stared.
“I would've known.”
“You were unconscious.”
“When?”
“After the crash.”
Graham's face drained.
“What crash?”
Sloane continued.
“The night Claire died.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“That was before Graham met her.”
Sloane nodded.
“Exactly.”
Graham's mind raced.
Claire had given birth to twins years before their marriage?
It made no sense.
Then Sloane pulled out a document.
A birth certificate.
Two names.
Maisie Claire Grant.
Mara Claire Grant.
Twins.
Graham stared.
“Who is Mara?”
Sloane whispered:
“Your father raised her.”
Graham looked at his father.
His father said nothing.
“Where is she?”
No answer.
Then Claire's voice came from the monitor.
“Graham.”
Everyone turned.
The screen showed Claire.
She was sitting in a train compartment.
Beside her was Ethan.
And beside Ethan was a little girl.
About Maisie's age.
Same brown hair.
Same eyes.
Same small birthmark on the left cheek.
Graham couldn't breathe.
“That's...”
Maisie stood beside him.
She looked at the screen.
The little girl looked back.
And smiled.
“Daddy?”
Graham covered his mouth.
Claire spoke.
“This is Mara.”
Graham's knees nearly gave way.
“They told me she died.”
Claire shook her head.
“She was taken.”
“By whom?”
Claire looked toward Ethan.
“By your father.”
Graham turned.
His father closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect her.”
“You stole my daughter.”
“I saved her.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust required an heir.”
Graham stared.
“Maisie was the heir.”
His father shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed to the birth certificate.
“Two heirs.”
Graham finally understood.
The Grant family trust had not been built around one child.
It required both twins.
If both were under the control of separate guardians, the network could control two fortunes.
One child had been placed under Graham.
The other under a secret guardian.
And Claire had discovered the scheme.
She tried to expose it.
They tried to silence her.
But she survived.
She escaped.
And now she had returned.
Graham looked at Sloane.
“Why did you marry me?”
Sloane's eyes filled with tears.
“To get close to Maisie.”
“For money?”
“At first.”
“And then?”
Sloane hesitated.
“I found Claire's records.”
“You knew she was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Victor threatened me.”
Graham laughed bitterly.
“So you chained my daughter.”
“I was trying to keep her from being taken.”
“You put her in a suitcase.”
“I knew what Northvale would do.”
Graham stared.
Sloane continued.
“I needed you to see the evidence before they arrived.”
“You could've told me.”
“I tried.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my trust.”
Tears ran down Sloane's face.
“Yes.”
“But you didn't kill Claire.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Sloane looked at the monitor.
Claire answered.
“Victor.”
Graham closed his eyes.
It was the final piece.
Victor had forged the documents.
He had arranged the placement.
He had manipulated Sloane.
He had used Morgan.
He had controlled Northvale.
And he had tried to eliminate everyone who knew the truth.
But there was still one question.
“Where is Victor now?”
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
A voice spoke.
Daniel's face changed.
“What?”
He looked at Graham.
“Victor escaped.”
“When?”
“Where is he going?”
Daniel looked at Claire on the screen.
Then at the map.
“He's heading to the lake house.”
Graham's stomach dropped.
“Why?”
Daniel whispered:
“The original trust deed is there.”
Graham turned toward the exit.
“No.”
Claire called out from the screen.
“Graham.”
He stopped.
“Don't chase him.”
“Why?”
Claire's expression changed.
“Because Victor isn't running.”
“What?”
“He's going back for the person who hired him.”
Graham stared.
“Who?”
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then another face appeared.
Graham's breath stopped.
A woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Alive.
Claire's mother.
Graham's mother-in-law.
The woman everyone had believed died twenty years ago.
She looked directly at him.
And smiled.
“You took long enough, Graham.”
The screen went black.
Graham stood frozen.
Beside him, Maisie whispered:
“Daddy.”
He looked down.
She was staring at the darkness.
“What?”
She took his hand.
Then she said the words that would change everything.
“That’s the woman Mommy was scared of.”
Graham looked toward the door.
Outside, sirens began to rise in the distance.
The wedding had been canceled.
The lies had been exposed.
Northvale was collapsing.
Claire was alive.
Mara was alive.
Victor was running.
And someone Graham's family had buried for twenty years had just stepped out of the shadows.
For three years, Graham had believed he was searching for the person who killed his wife.
Now he understood the truth.
May you like
The person he should have been searching for had never died at all.
And she had been waiting for him to find her.
