Chapter 11 - They returned to the Grant estate before dawn.

The property looked abandoned.
No security guards.
No wedding decorations.
Just broken windows and scattered flowers.
Graham walked into his office.
His desk looked untouched.
He searched every drawer.
Nothing.
Maisie stood near the bookshelf.
She pointed.
“There.”
Graham followed her finger.
An old photograph.
His father.
Graham.
Claire.
The frame had been slightly shifted.
He moved it.
Behind it was a keyhole.
He inserted Maisie's key.
A hidden drawer slid open.
Inside was a videotape.
No label.
Graham stared at it.
He suddenly remembered his father's old camera.
The one that had disappeared after his death.
Daniel found a compatible player in storage.
They inserted the tape.
Static.
Then the image appeared.
Claire.
Alive.
Sitting in Graham's office.
She was speaking directly to the camera.
“Graham, if you're watching this, I failed to leave before they came.”
Graham's eyes burned.
Claire continued.
“Everything you were told about my death is false.”
She placed a document on the desk.
“Your father knew about the trust.”
She placed another.
“Sloane's mother knew.”
Another.
“Victor knew.”
Graham looked at Victor's name.
Claire leaned toward the camera.
“But there is someone else.”
She stopped.
Then spoke the name.
“Daniel.”
The room went silent.
Graham turned.
Daniel didn't move.
The tape continued.
“Daniel was working for your father.”
Graham stared.
“You said you helped Claire.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Claire continued.
“He was ordered to follow me.”
Daniel looked away.
“But he changed sides.”
Graham watched the screen.
“He tried to help me escape.”
The video showed Claire standing.
A noise came from outside.
She looked frightened.
“Graham, if Daniel tells you he rescued me, don't believe him completely.”
Graham's eyes narrowed.
“Because he was there.”
Claire's voice shook.
“He was there when your father came.”
Then the tape cut to black.
Daniel spoke.
“I never touched her.”
Graham turned.
“Were you there?”
“Yes.”
“You watched?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop him?”
“Because I couldn't.”
“You were armed.”
“Your father had six men.”
Graham stepped closer.
“You let my wife die.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
Daniel pulled a second tape from his pocket.
“I stole this before they killed Claire.”
He inserted it.
The image appeared.
Night.
The Grant estate.
Claire stood near the staircase.
Sloane entered.
Then Graham's father.
Then another person.
Graham leaned forward.
The camera angle shifted.
A young man stepped into view.
Graham stared.
He knew him.
Impossible.
His older brother.
Ethan.
Dead since childhood.
Graham whispered:
“That's my brother.”
Daniel said nothing.
On the tape, Claire recoiled.
Ethan said:
“You weren't supposed to come back.”
Claire replied:
“Graham needs to know.”
Ethan looked toward the camera.
“Not if he's alive.”
Graham's blood ran cold.
His brother had supposedly died at age nineteen.
The tape was filmed three years ago.
Claire pointed at him.
“You've been alive this whole time.”
Ethan smiled.
“So have I.”
The footage cut.
Graham stared at Daniel.
“My brother is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Who knew?”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Her.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Graham turned.
“You knew.”
“I knew Ethan was alive.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he joined the network.”
The words landed like a blow.
“My brother is one of them?”
“No.”
Evelyn corrected herself.
“He infiltrated them.”
Graham laughed bitterly.
“So everybody lies.”
Daniel suddenly checked the window.
“We're not alone.”
A shadow passed outside.
Then the office phone rang.
Graham answered.
Silence.
Then a male voice.
Older.
Familiar.
“Little brother.”
Graham couldn't breathe.
“Ethan?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“Watching you.”
“Why?”
“Because you're about to discover what really happened to Claire.”
Graham gripped the receiver.
“Tell me.”
Ethan's voice softened.
“You've been looking for the wrong killer.”
“Who killed her?”
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Claire wasn't supposed to die that night.”
Graham's stomach dropped.
“What?”
“She survived the fall.”
Silence.
“She was alive when they took her.”
“Who took her?”
Ethan whispered:
“Your daughter knows.”
The phone clicked dead.
Graham turned toward Maisie.
She was staring at the screen.
Tears rolled down her face.
“I remember.”
“What?”
May you like
She whispered:
“Mommy was still alive.”
