Chapter 13 - Graham stood frozen in the darkness.

That voice.
Impossible.
Yet unmistakable.
His father's voice.
“Dad?”
No answer.
Morgan backed away.
Daniel raised his weapon.
A single light switched on.
At the far end of the warehouse stood an older man.
Gray hair.
Walking cane.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Graham couldn't move.
His father looked at him.
“You've become difficult.”
Graham's mouth went dry.
“You're alive.”
His father smiled.
“You were always emotional.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I needed everyone to believe I was dead.”
“You let me believe Claire left us.”
“Yes.”
“You let them take my daughter.”
His father's expression remained calm.
“That was not supposed to happen.”
Graham laughed.
A bitter, broken laugh.
“You created this.”
“Yes.”
“For money.”
“For control.”
“What's the difference?”
His father stepped closer.
“Do you know why Northvale was created?”
“I know what it became.”
“It was designed to protect family wealth from criminals.”
Graham stared.
“And then?”
“Then weak people took control.”
“Did Claire know?”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill her?”
“No.”
“Did you order anyone to?”
Silence.
Graham's father finally answered.
“No.”
Graham stepped forward.
“Then who?”
His father looked at Morgan.
Morgan lowered his head.
The answer appeared before anyone spoke.
Graham's father had trusted Morgan.
Morgan had betrayed him.
Morgan whispered:
“Claire found the offshore accounts.”
Graham stared.
“Accounts?”
“Money was being moved without your father's knowledge.”
“By who?”
Morgan's eyes filled with fear.
“The Harpers.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“That is a lie.”
Morgan shook his head.
“You were there.”
“You wanted Claire dead.”
“I wanted the ledger.”
Graham turned.
“So you killed her.”
Morgan began crying.
“She was going to expose all of us.”
Graham's father looked disgusted.
“You idiot.”
Morgan stared at him.
“You said the system would protect us.”
“I said the system would protect the children.”
“You created the system!”
“To protect them.”
“Then why did you keep the money?”
His father looked at Graham.
“Because I was a coward.”
Silence.
Graham's father's shoulders dropped.
For the first time, the man looked old.
“I knew the trust had become corrupt.”
He looked at Maisie.
“I knew they intended to use her.”
“Then why didn't you stop them?”
“Because I thought I could control it.”
Graham's face hardened.
“Just like everyone else.”
His father nodded.
“Yes.”
Then the warehouse door burst open.
Police flooded inside.
Graham turned.
Morgan ran.
Daniel tackled him.
Officers restrained him.
An officer shouted:
“Graham Grant?”
Graham raised his hands.
“I'm here.”
The officer approached.
“We have a warrant for your arrest.”
Graham stared.
“For what?”
“Fraud. Insurance manipulation. Illegal guardianship interference.”
His father smiled sadly.
“They're moving faster now.”
Graham understood.
Someone had activated the final phase.
His father's death certificate.
The trust.
The police warrant.
Everything was happening at once.
“Who filed the complaint?”
The officer checked the paperwork.
“Northvale.”
Graham laughed.
Again.
Northvale.
Always Northvale.
He was about to be arrested while the people who forged the documents disappeared.
Then Maisie shouted:
“Daddy!”
Everyone turned.
She was pointing at Morgan.
The five-year-old whispered:
“He gave Sloane the medicine.”
Graham froze.
“What medicine?”
Maisie stared at Morgan.
“The medicine that made Mommy sleep.”
Morgan's face collapsed.
Graham stepped toward him.
“What did you give Claire?”
Morgan said nothing.
“Answer me!”
Morgan broke.
“Sedatives.”
Graham's eyes burned.
“Why?”
“She wouldn't tell us where the ledger was.”
“And then?”
Morgan whispered:
“She woke up.”
“What?”
“She survived the fall.”
Graham's heart stopped.
Morgan looked at him.
“She was alive.”
Graham's voice disappeared.
“Then what happened?”
Morgan looked toward Graham's father.
“He told me to take her away.”
Graham turned.
“Where?”
Morgan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“Where?”
“Northvale.”
Graham stared.
“She wasn't dead.”
“No.”
“She was transferred.”
“Yes.”
Graham turned toward the police.
“You have to find her.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Morgan lowered his eyes.
“She was alive when they transported her.”
Graham's entire world shifted.
Claire had not died three years ago.
She had disappeared.
And someone had been keeping her alive.
The question was why.
Then his father whispered:
“Because she remembered the location of the original ledger.”
Graham looked at him.
“Where?”
May you like
His father closed his eyes.
“Under Northvale.”
