CHAPTER 2: “TWENTY-THREE YEARS OF LIES”

CHAPTER 1: “THE BOX HE SHOULD NOT HAVE HELD”

The entire hall remained frozen in shock.

Eleanor still held the maid like she was afraid she would disappear if she let go.

Then—

A slow sound broke the silence.

Clack.

Wood against marble.

Everyone turned.

At the top of the staircase, Eleanor’s husband—Lord Whitmore—stood perfectly still. Calm. Too calm.

In his hand was a small jewelry box.

Old. Scratched at the edges.

The kind of object that did not belong in a house like this.

Eleanor’s voice cracked.

“Where did you get that…?”

Lord Whitmore didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked down the steps slowly, each footstep echoing like a countdown.

The maid instinctively stepped back.

But Eleanor didn’t let go of her.

“Don’t come closer,” she warned.

For the first time, her husband looked directly at her.

“I was waiting for this moment,” he said quietly.

The room shifted.

“What moment?” Eleanor asked.

He lifted the box.

“The moment the truth stopped hiding behind grief.”

A faint click.

He opened it.

Inside was a hospital bracelet—yellowed with age.

And a second document.

A birth record.

Eleanor’s breathing stopped.

Because on it… was her name.

And a second name crossed out.

Eleanor Whitmore.

Mother of: unknown female child.

The maid’s knees nearly gave out.

“That’s not possible…” she whispered.

Lord Whitmore exhaled slowly.

“It’s very possible,” he said. “Because I was there when it happened.”
