Chapter 2: The Woman Who Stayed Silent

Chapter 1: The Cracks in the Empire

"Filed what?" Mark demanded.

Howard Briggs exhaled slowly.

"The divorce petition. The petition for removal from executive authority. And several motions related to Sterling Capital Group."

Mark gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.

"Removal?" he snapped. "I'm the CEO."

"You were the CEO," Howard corrected carefully. "As of nine-thirty this morning, Elena exercised her controlling voting rights through the Marello Heritage Trust. The board held an emergency session."

The room tilted.

"No," Mark said.

"I'm sorry, Mark."

"You knew?"

Howard hesitated.

"I knew this morning."

"You represented me."

"I represent your interests. But Elena's filings were legal, documented, and impossible to delay."

Mark ended the call.

For the first time in decades, silence frightened him.

He drove straight to Sterling Capital Group.

The receptionist who had greeted him every morning for fifteen years stood as he entered.

Her smile was strained.

"Mr. Sterling..."

He pressed the elevator button.

His access card flashed red.

Access denied.

"What is this?"

Two security officers approached.

"Sir," one said quietly, "we've been instructed to escort you to Conference Room B."

Conference Room B.

Not the executive boardroom.

Not his office.

The small room used for uncomfortable conversations.

Inside sat seven board members.

People who had toasted his promotions.

Attended charity galas.

Played golf with him.

Avoided his eyes.

Richard Lawson, chairman of the board, folded his hands.

"Mark, please sit."

"I'll stand."

Richard nodded.

"As majority shareholder, Elena Sterling initiated leadership restructuring."

"This is insanity."

"No," another director said softly. "It's corporate governance."

"You can't remove me."

"You were removed two hours ago."

Mark stared at them.

"You knew."

"We knew the ownership structure," Richard replied.

"You didn't?"

Every face in the room answered before any voice did.

They had all known.

Everyone except him.

His title.

His authority.

Even his kingdom.

They had all rested upon foundations built by Elena's family.

The Marellos.

The name he had never bothered to understand.

When he left the building carrying one cardboard box of personal belongings, Jessica Hartley was waiting outside his office.

She looked pale.

May you like

"We need to talk," she whispered.

Mark suddenly realized he had no office left to invite her into.
