Chapter 3: A Brother's Choice
Chapter 3: A Brother's Choice
The courtroom recessed while federal investigators confirmed the woman's identity.
DNA.
Fingerprints.
Medical records.
Every result said the same thing.
She was their mother.
The little boy ran into her arms first.
He buried his face against her shoulder and cried until he could barely breathe.
She held him tighter than she thought possible.
"I'm so sorry..."
"I'm so sorry..."
Aaron stayed across the room.
Watching.
Silent.
His lawyer approached.
"You don't have to forgive her today."
Aaron nodded.
"I know."
His mother slowly walked toward him.
She stopped several feet away.
"I don't expect you to call me Mom."
"I don't expect anything."
"I just need you to know..."
"I never abandoned you."
Aaron finally looked into her eyes.
"I believe you."
She gasped.
"But..."
His voice broke.
"You still missed six birthdays."
"You missed when he had pneumonia."
"You missed when I quit football to work nights."
"You missed every nightmare."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I know."
"And I can never get that back."
Aaron lowered his head.
"For six years..."
"I wasn't your son."
"I became his parent."
The little boy quietly walked over and took both of their hands.
"You don't have to choose."
The simple sentence shattered the wall Aaron had spent years building around his heart.
For the first time since she appeared...
He hugged her.
Not because everything was healed.
But because neither of them wanted to lose another day.

The entire courtroom quietly applauded through tears.
Even the judge removed his glasses.
