Chapter 3 – The Price of Humiliation
Julian suddenly rushed toward the stage.
"Sarah... wait."
Security immediately stepped between them.
He stopped.
For the first time in years...
someone had told him no.
He looked toward Maxwell desperately.
"Sir... this has to be a misunderstanding."
Maxwell slowly stood.
The room instinctively straightened.
His voice remained calm.
"It isn't."
He walked onto the stage beside Sarah.
"Three years ago, Sarah personally financed this company's recovery after the recession."
"She refused publicity."
"She refused a title."
"She wanted to understand the business from the ground up."
Maxwell glanced around the ballroom.
"So she worked anonymously."
"In housekeeping."
"At reception."
"In childcare during family events."
Every executive in the room stared at Sarah in disbelief.
Julian felt his knees weaken.
"You... chose to be a nanny?"
Sarah nodded.
"I wanted to know whether kindness survives without wealth."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"You answered that question every single day."
Maxwell raised another document.
"Effective immediately..."
"Julian Carter is removed as Regional Director."
Gasps erupted.
"And because Ms. Cynthia Brooks knowingly falsified expense reports while conspiring to damage company reputation..."
He closed the folder.
"Her consulting contract is terminated."
Cynthia's face turned ghost white.
"No... please..."
Security quietly approached.
Neither argued.
Neither could.
As they were escorted away, the guests stepped aside without saying a word.

Only moments earlier they had laughed.
Now they couldn't even look Sarah in the eye.
