CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN ON THE SCREEN Emma's tiny hand trembled so violently she almost dropped the phone. The glowing security screen beneath the piano filled with live camera feeds from every room in the mansion. One by one... The foyer. The gallery. The wine cellar. The upstairs hallway. Then Camera Seven appeared. Emma's breath caught. Victoria. Her stepmother. She wasn't tied up. She wasn't hiding. She wasn't frightened. She was calmly directing the masked men as if she had planned every second of the robbery. "Leave the sculptures," Victoria ordered coldly. "The buyer only wants the paintings... and the documents from Richard's study." One burglar hesitated. "What about the little girl?" Victoria didn't even blink. "If you find Emma..." She paused just long enough to smile. "...make sure she never talks." Emma covered her mouth to stop herself from crying. On the phone, Richard heard everything. His voice remained terrifyingly calm. "Emma." "Daddy..." "I need you to listen carefully." "I'm scared." "I know." "You remember the story about pirates hiding treasure?" Emma nodded before realizing he couldn't see her. "Yes." "Good." "The piano isn't just hiding cameras." "It hides something else." Before Emma could ask what he meant... A loud crash echoed through the hallway. "They're searching this room!" one of the burglars shouted. Heavy footsteps rushed toward the music room. Someone grabbed the doorknob. The handle slowly began to turn. Emma stopped breathing. Then... The entire mansion suddenly went dark. Every light disappeared. Even the security screen went black. And someone outside whispered... "She's in here." / Chapter 1 / 2 72

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE PIANO

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE PIANO

Darkness swallowed the room.

Only flashes of lightning leaked through the tall windows.

Emma squeezed herself farther beneath the piano.

Outside...

The burglars searched blindly.

"Check everywhere!"

"She couldn't have disappeared!"

Richard's voice returned through the phone.

"Emma..."

"I'm here."

"Reach behind the left piano leg."

Her fingers searched the polished wood.

She felt...

Metal.

A hidden lever.

She pulled it.

The floor beneath the piano silently lowered several inches.

A narrow steel compartment opened beneath her.

Inside rested a small biometric safe.

And beside it...

A silver envelope marked in bold handwriting.

FOR EMMA — ONLY IF I'M TOO LATE.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daddy..."

"I found it."

"Open the envelope first."

Inside was a tiny flash drive...

A family photograph...

And one handwritten sentence.

Trust no one except Detective Sarah Cole.

Before Emma could read more...

The music room door burst open.

Flashlights swept across the room.

"There!"

A masked man pointed beneath the piano.

He lunged forward—

Only to slam face-first into reinforced steel.

The hidden compartment had sealed itself automatically.

Furious, the burglars pounded on the floor.

Victoria entered seconds later.

She stared at the empty space beneath the piano.

Impossible.

She watched Emma disappear into a place she had never known existed.

For the first time that night...

Victoria looked afraid.

Then every phone in the mansion rang simultaneously.

Richard's voice echoed through every speaker.

"I've been recording you for the last eighteen minutes."

Silence.

Then he added...

May you like

"The police are no longer ten minutes away."

"They're already inside the house."
