CHAPTER 3 — THE WAR HE STARTED FOR HER

The kidnapping happened on a rainy Thursday.

Emma had just left the hospital after visiting her mother.

She never saw the van.

One second she was walking.

The next—

Darkness.

When Dante received the call, the entire penthouse froze.

Luca had never seen his boss's face turn that color.

"They took Emma."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Then Dante stood.

Every person in the room immediately stepped backward.

Because they knew.

Someone was about to die.

For forty-eight hours, New York became a battlefield.

Warehouses were raided.

Safe houses burned.

Informants disappeared.

Every camera, every contact, every favor Dante had accumulated over fifteen years was activated.

Not for territory.

Not for money.

Not for power.

For Emma.

Luca watched the destruction unfold and finally understood something horrifying.

The boss wasn't protecting her.

The boss loved her.

By the second night, they found her location.

An abandoned shipping terminal on the Hudson.

Dante arrived before the police.

Before backup.

Before common sense.

Gunfire erupted.

Men shouted.

Windows shattered.

But Dante kept moving.

One enemy.

Then another.

Then another.

Until he reached the room at the end of the building.

Emma sat tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

Alive.

Their eyes met.

For a second, neither spoke.

Then Emma whispered,

"You came."

Dante stared at her.

Rainwater dripped from his jacket.

Blood stained his sleeve.

And suddenly all the fear he'd carried for two days exploded into anger.

"You think that's surprising?"

Emma blinked.

"You started a war."

"Of course I did."

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without shame.

The room became very quiet.

Dante stepped forward and cut the ropes.

His hands shook.

Emma noticed.

The most feared man in New York was shaking.

Because he had almost lost her.

And for the first time, Dante stopped fighting the truth.

He pulled her into his arms.

Holding her so tightly she could hear his heartbeat.

"I thought you were dead."

Emma closed her eyes.

For the first time since meeting him, she stopped resisting.

Because she had been terrified too.

Terrified that nobody would come.

Terrified that the last face she wanted to see would never appear.

Yet here he was.

Exactly where her heart had hoped he would be.

When she finally looked up, Dante pressed his forehead against hers.

"I love you."

No games.

No manipulation.

No hidden cameras.

Just truth.

The three words he had spent years running from.

May you like

Emma smiled through tears.

"Took you long enough."
