CHAPTER 4 — The Shared Loaf
A year later...
The little bakery had changed.
Every evening, one basket sat beside the front door.
Above it hung a simple wooden sign.
TAKE ONE IF YOU'RE HUNGRY. LEAVE ONE IF YOU CAN.
No prices.
No questions.
No judgment.
Emily and Lily stood together behind the counter after school.
Whenever someone walked in with empty hands...
They always left with warm bread.
Sometimes they also left with a hug.
People from all over the city began calling it...
"The Shared Loaf."
Visitors often asked the old baker why he gave away so much food.
He would simply point toward the framed photograph on the wall.
It showed two little girls sitting on a freezing sidewalk...
Holding one broken loaf of bread.
Smiling.
"That loaf," he would say quietly,
"saved more than one little girl."
"It reminded an entire city that compassion is never divided when it's shared."
And outside the bakery...
May you like
Whenever winter came...
No child was ever left hungry on that street again.
