CHAPTER 3: THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY
CHAPTER 3: THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY
Two nights later, the mansion glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
Nearly two hundred guests filled the ballroom.
Business executives.
Politicians.
Charity board members.
News reporters.
Everyone had gathered to celebrate Marcus Vale's engagement to Cassandra.
She looked flawless in an ivory designer gown.
Elegant.
Graceful.
Perfect.
Exactly the woman everyone believed she was.
Lily stood quietly beside her father in a pale blue dress.
She hadn't smiled once.
Several guests noticed.
"Poor thing still misses her mother."
Cassandra sighed dramatically.
"It's been difficult."
"I've tried everything."
Marcus looked at her.
"You've done... more than enough."
She smiled proudly.
"I only want to be the mother she deserves."
The audience applauded.
Champagne glasses lifted.
A string quartet began to play.
Then Marcus tapped his glass.
"I'd like to thank everyone for joining us."
More applause.
"There is just one final surprise before we celebrate."
The ballroom lights dimmed.
A giant projection screen descended from the ceiling.
Cassandra frowned.
"I didn't know you prepared a video."
Marcus smiled.
"You've never seen this one."
The first image appeared.
Security camera footage.
Time stamp.
Kitchen.
11:42 p.m.
Guests leaned forward.
Confused.
Then they saw Lily.
Kneeling beside a dog bowl.
Silence swept across the room.
Someone gasped.
The next clip played.
Cassandra throwing Lily's dinner into the trash.
Another clip.
Cassandra grabbing Lily's arm so hard the child cried.
Another.
"You belong on the floor."
Another.
"Your father only keeps you because people would judge him."
The ballroom froze.
One woman covered her mouth.
Another guest began crying.
Several executives quietly lowered their champagne glasses.
Every lie Cassandra had carefully built...
Collapsed in less than four minutes.
She rushed toward the projector.
"Turn it off!"
Marcus calmly stepped between her and the screen.
"No."
She grabbed his arm.
"They're fake!"
Marcus looked directly into her eyes.
"Really?"
"Then explain why every recording came from the security system you never knew existed."

For the first time...
Cassandra stopped smiling.
