Chapter 3: A New Beginning

Chapter 3: A New Beginning

The following morning, every employee was called into the diner before opening.

Barnes arrived confident that nothing would happen.

Instead, Daniel stood beside a lawyer.

The documents were already waiting.

"I'm terminating your employment effective immediately," Daniel said.

Barnes exploded.

"You can't fire me over one meal!"

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"I'm firing you because you've forgotten why this place exists."

The lawyer quietly slid several complaint files across the counter.

Dozens.

Former employees.

Regular customers.

Even suppliers.

Stories of insults.

Humiliation.

People turned away because they looked poor.

Daniel had never seen them.

Barnes had hidden every complaint.

Security footage from the previous night played on a television behind the counter.

Everyone watched Barnes throw the food onto the floor.

No one spoke.

Barnes lowered his head.

Minutes later, he walked out carrying a cardboard box.

He never looked back.

Daniel turned to Maya.

"I have another decision."

She held her breath.

"I'd like you to become the new general manager."

Her eyes widened.

"I've never managed a restaurant."

"I know."

He smiled.

"But character can be taught to lead."

The entire staff applauded.

Maya burst into tears for the first time.

Not from fear.

From relief.
