Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Locked Door Daniel Carter had negotiated billion-dollar contracts without breaking a sweat. But nothing in his life prepared him for the terrified little girl hiding inside the bridal restroom. He glanced toward the ballroom where a string quartet continued playing as if nothing had happened. Guests laughed. Champagne flowed. His bride was only minutes away from walking down the aisle. Yet this child looked as though she had been hiding from a storm. Daniel lowered his voice. "What's your name?" The little girl hesitated. "Lily." "How old are you?" "I'm five." She hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter. "My mommy said if anyone found me..." "...I should stay very quiet." Daniel swallowed. "Where is your mommy?" Lily slowly pointed toward the bridal suite. His heart skipped. The bridal suite. Only family and bridesmaids were allowed inside. Before he could ask another question, footsteps echoed down the hallway. A bridesmaid appeared. The moment she saw Lily, every bit of color drained from her face. "There you are!" Her smile looked forced. She hurried forward. "The bride has been looking everywhere for you." Lily immediately hid behind Daniel. Tiny fingers grabbed his tuxedo sleeve. "I don't want to go." The bridesmaid's smile disappeared for just one second. It was enough. Daniel noticed. "So," he asked calmly, "how do you know this little girl?" The woman hesitated. "She's... my cousin's daughter." Lily shook her head. "No." The hallway became silent. "She's Mommy's friend." The bridesmaid's breathing quickened. Then she reached for Lily. Daniel stepped between them. "I think I'll take her back myself." The bridesmaid froze. For the first time... She looked frightened. Then Daniel noticed something else. Around Lily's neck hung a tiny silver necklace. A small heart-shaped locket. Exactly like the one he had given his fiancée six years earlier. The same custom engraving. The same initials. D.C. His blood ran cold. / Chapter 1 / 2 6

Chapter 3: The Truth No One Wanted Him to Know

Daniel stood motionless.

His fingers trembled as he stared at the little silver locket.

Only one had ever been made.

He remembered ordering it himself.

Inside...

A tiny photograph.

He knelt before Lily.

"May I see your necklace?"

She nodded.

He carefully opened the heart-shaped locket.

Inside was an old photograph.

A younger Daniel.

Standing beside Emily.

The woman he had loved before she vanished without explanation six years earlier.

His breathing stopped.

Emily had disappeared one week before their engagement.

Her family claimed she had moved overseas.

She never called.

Never wrote.

Daniel had spent years believing she had simply stopped loving him.

Until now.

He looked at Lily.

"When's your birthday?"

"September eighteenth."

Daniel silently counted.

Five years.

Five months.

Exactly enough.

His eyes filled with disbelief.

"You... can't be..."

Before he finished speaking, another voice interrupted.

"There you are."

The bride.

Sophia.

Still wearing her elegant white gown.

Her perfect smile vanished the instant she saw Lily.

Then Daniel noticed something even worse.

Sophia wasn't surprised.

She looked... caught.

Lily buried her face against Daniel's shoulder.

"You promised Mommy you wouldn't let her find me."

Daniel slowly turned.

"What exactly is going on?"

Sophia tried to laugh.

"It's complicated."

"No."

His voice was calm.

"It's over."

Just then...

The doors at the far end of the hallway burst open.

Two police detectives entered with a pale, exhausted woman behind them.

Emily.

Alive.

She looked directly at Daniel.

Then at Lily.

Tears rolled down her face.

"I've been trying to find our daughter for five years."

The entire wedding stopped.
