Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Barn
Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Barn
That evening, the rancher invited Emma into the oldest barn on the property.
Dust floated through the golden light streaming between the wooden boards.
Nothing inside had been touched for years.
At the far end stood a weathered saddle covered with an old canvas cloth.
The rancher carefully pulled it away.
Burned into the leather was one word.
Midnight.
Emma gently traced the faded letters.
"My daddy made this."
The rancher nodded.
"He said no one else would ever ride him."
Inside one of the saddle bags, something rattled.
He opened it carefully.
There was a small metal box.
Inside lay a folded letter.
Its edges were yellow with age.
The rancher slowly opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakably Daniel's.
If you're reading this, something happened to me.
Please don't let anyone sell Midnight.
He isn't property.
He's family.
One day my daughter will come looking for him.
When she does... give him back.
He already knows who she is.
The rancher's hands trembled.
He looked at Emma.
"You were only a baby."
She smiled sadly.
"My daddy always told me... animals never forget love."
The rancher closed his eyes.
For twenty years he had believed his friend had abandoned everything.
