Chapter 3 — The Lie That Destroyed Two Lives
Chapter 3 — The Lie That Destroyed Two Lives
The ride to St. Anne's Medical Center took less than twenty minutes.
It felt like twenty years.
More than fifty motorcycles thundered across the highway behind Tank, surrounding Lily like a moving wall of steel.
Nobody joked.
Nobody revved their engines for attention.
The brotherhood rode in complete silence.
When they reached the hospital, a nurse met them outside.
"You must be Lily."
She smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry."
"You were almost too late."
Tank froze.
Lily grabbed his massive hand.
"Please..."
The nurse led them into a quiet room.
Emily lay motionless beneath a thin white blanket.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably her.
Tank stopped breathing.
He slowly approached the bed.
"I'm here."
No response.
He reached for her hand.
Still warm.
Then...
Her fingers moved.
Barely.
Her eyes opened.
She stared at him for several endless seconds.
"You came..."
His voice broke.
"I never stopped looking."
A single tear rolled down Emily's face.
"I know."
Tank frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Emily looked toward the doorway.
"I found out six months ago."
"Found out what?"
"Razor came to see me."
The room became completely still.
"He admitted everything."
Tank's heart pounded.
Emily continued weakly.
"The letters you mailed..."
"He burned them."
"The money you sent..."
"He stole it."
"The addresses..."
"He changed every one."
Lily stared in complete confusion.
Tank felt something inside him collapse.
For fifteen years...
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every letter.
Every dollar.
Every chance to find his family...
Had been destroyed by the man he trusted more than his own brother.
Outside the room...
Heavy boots stopped walking.
Razor stood frozen in the hallway.
He had heard every word.
May you like
And he knew...
There was nowhere left to run.
