Chapter 3: The Confession That Destroyed a Family
Chapter 3: The Confession That Destroyed a Family
Within an hour, Daniel, Emily, Victoria, and several police investigators stood inside the quiet nursing home.
Daniel's eighty-six-year-old father had passed away only forty minutes earlier.
But before dying...
He had left behind a sealed cassette tape.
His lawyer pressed Play.
Static filled the room.
Then came the trembling voice.
"If you're hearing this... I've run out of time."
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father's confession continued.
"The fire never killed your baby sister."
"I lied."
"I paid a nurse to tell everyone she was dead."
Emily's face drained of color.
The old man continued.
"Our family had enemies."
"They wanted the family fortune."
"I believed separating my children was the only way to save them."
The room stood frozen.
Then came the final sentence.
"But I was betrayed."
"The nurse sold the baby to another family before I could bring her home."
Emily covered her mouth.
Tears silently rolled down her cheeks.
Her entire life...
She had believed she had been abandoned.
Daniel slowly walked toward her.
"I spent twenty-five years mourning you."
Emily whispered,
"I spent twenty-five years wondering why nobody came."
Victoria lowered her eyes.
Every cruel word she had spoken inside the ballroom now echoed painfully inside her own heart.
But another surprise waited.
The lawyer opened one final envelope.
Inside was a new will.
Every member of the family leaned forward.
The lawyer read aloud.
"To my daughter Emily..."
"I leave the estate that should always have been hers."
The inheritance was worth nearly two hundred million dollars.
Emily looked at the document...
Then quietly pushed it back across the table.
"I didn't come looking for money."
May you like
"I only wanted to know who I was."
Daniel couldn't hold back his tears anymore.
