Chapter 2: The Photograph

Chapter 1: The Kiss That Broke His Heart

The little girl looked at the veteran with wide, innocent eyes.

“Whenever I get hurt, my mommy kisses it and it feels better…”

The man smiled weakly.

“That sounds nice,” he said.

Then the girl tilted her head.

“Do you have a mommy?”

The question hit him harder than any bullet ever had.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

The guests behind them continued laughing, unaware of the storm raging inside him.

Finally, he shook his head.

“No, sweetheart. My mom passed away a long time ago.”

The girl frowned.

“Then who kisses your hurt?”

The veteran's eyes filled with tears.

Nobody.

For fifteen years, nobody had.

Not after the war.

Not after the injury.

Not after his wife left.

Not after he learned that his infant daughter had died during a hospital accident while he was overseas.

The little girl reached up and gently touched his cheek.

“That's sad.”

A tear escaped his eye.

He quickly wiped it away.

But the child had already seen it.

Without warning, she wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.

The veteran froze.

The warmth of that small hug shattered every wall he had built around his heart.

And for the first time in years...

He cried.
