CHAPTER 2: THE PAPERS HE NEVER READ Ethan smiled as he reached for the folder. He expected to find bank statements. Maybe transfer forms. Instead, the first page carried the gold seal of the law firm. His smile faded. "What is this?" "Keep reading," I said. Linda leaned over his shoulder, already impatient. "We don't need legal paperwork. We just need the transfer authorization." "You should read every page," I replied. "You'll understand soon enough." Ethan flipped to the second document. His eyebrows pulled together. Then the color drained from his face. "No..." He turned another page. Then another. His hands began to shake. Linda grabbed the papers from him. "What is wrong with you?" She scanned the first paragraph. "What does this even mean?" I folded my arms. "It means the house isn't ours anymore." Linda looked up. "What?" "Six months ago," I said, "after my mother passed away, I asked Ethan to sign a package of refinancing documents." Ethan swallowed hard. "You said those were mortgage papers." "I said they were documents that protected our future." "Which was true." He stared at me. "You lied." "No." "You simply chose not to read what you signed." The room fell silent. I continued calmly. "The property was transferred into the Sophia Carter Family Trust." "The trust owns the house." "I do." "And according to the trust agreement..." I pointed to the final page. "...any spouse attempting to claim inherited assets without written consent immediately forfeits all occupancy rights." Linda blinked. "That's impossible." "It was drafted by one of the best estate attorneys in New York." I looked directly at Ethan. "You signed every page." Without reading a single word. The silence became unbearable. Then Ethan whispered the question he never imagined asking. "Are... are we being kicked out?" I gave him the same calm smile he had given me earlier. "We'll discuss that after breakfast." For the first time in years... Neither of them had anything to say. / Chapter 1 / 2

CHAPTER 3: RYAN ARRIVES FOR HIS MONEY

CHAPTER 3: RYAN ARRIVES FOR HIS MONEY

Forty minutes later, the front door opened again.

Ryan walked in wearing sunglasses and a grin that stretched from ear to ear.

"There she is!" he laughed.

"I knew my big brother wouldn't let me down."

He rubbed his hands together.

"So... when do I get my seven million?"

Nobody answered.

Ryan frowned.

"Why does everyone look like someone died?"

Linda's eyes were red.

Ethan hadn't spoken in nearly twenty minutes.

Ryan looked at me.

"What happened?"

I slid the folder across the table.

"Read it."

He skimmed the first page before tossing it aside.

"I don't care about legal stuff."

"I just need the money before the bank freezes everything."

"You mean before the court freezes everything," I corrected.

His smile disappeared.

"What court?"

I pulled another envelope from my handbag.

"This one."

Inside was a notice from the financial crimes division.

Weeks earlier, I had discovered Ryan had been using fake investor contracts to keep his failing business alive.

I hadn't reported him.

His own investors had.

The investigation had already begun.

His bank accounts were under review.

His assets were being frozen.

Ryan's hands trembled.

"Who gave you this?"

"My attorney."

He stepped backward.

"This... this can't be happening."

"It already is."

The confident man who had walked into my house seconds earlier suddenly looked like a frightened child.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Another creditor.

Then another.

Then another.

One by one...

He declined every call.

May you like

Because deep down...

He already knew there was no escaping them.
