CHAPTER 2: THE PAPER TRAIL BREAKS

CHAPTER 2: THE PAPER TRAIL BREAKS

The arrival was silent.

Too silent.

A black vehicle pulled up behind the estate without announcement, without hesitation.

Two men stepped out.

Not rushing.

Not asking.

Just observing the situation like it had already been solved on paper.

One of them held a tablet.

The other held a folder.

The wind didn’t affect them the way it affected everyone else.

The older man opened the folder.

“Daniel Mercer?” he asked calmly.

Daniel straightened immediately.

“Yes. And you are—”

The man didn’t answer.

He simply turned the folder toward him.

Inside:

Stamped documents.

Signatures.

Dates.

And one line highlighted in red.

Ownership: Ethan Mercer — full transfer validated.

Daniel stared.

Then laughed again—but it broke halfway through.

“That’s forged.”

The man shook his head once.

“No.”

Claire stepped forward slightly, voice trembling.

“I saw him sign something months ago… but he said it was just insurance paperwork…”

Ethan finally spoke again.

“You never read it.”

A silence followed that was heavier than the wind.

The father exhaled slowly.

Like a man realizing the truth had been sitting in front of him all along.

Daniel backed up toward the glass door.

“No… no, this is my house. I bought it—”

The second man spoke for the first time.

“You rented it through a shell trust.”

That sentence ended him.

Not loudly.

May you like

Just cleanly.

Like a door locking from the outside.
