Chapter 2: The Offer

Chapter 1: The Debt of Kindness

Victoria Langford's face twisted with fury.

"How dare you touch me?" she hissed.

Emma released Victoria's wrist immediately, her own hands shaking.

"I... I'm sorry, ma'am," Emma said breathlessly. "But you were going to hurt her."

The ballroom remained frozen.

Hundreds of eyes moved between the trembling waitress and one of Chicago's most powerful socialites.

Victoria's humiliation ignited into rage.

"Do you have any idea who I am?" she snapped.

Emma swallowed hard.

"That doesn't matter."

A collective gasp swept through the guests.

Victoria took a threatening step forward.

"You insignificant little girl. I could have you fired before this evening ends."

"I know," Emma answered quietly.

She did know.

She knew exactly how fragile her life was.

One lost paycheck meant unpaid rent.

One unpaid bill meant another impossible choice.

But when she'd seen Victoria grab the elderly woman by the shoulders and scream at her over an accidental spill of champagne, she'd remembered her father's helpless expression after his stroke.

She couldn't stand by.

The elderly woman finally spoke.

"Enough."

Her voice was soft.

Yet the authority behind it silenced the room.

Isabella Moretti lifted her gaze toward Victoria.

"It was an accident," she said calmly.

Victoria's confidence faltered.

"Mrs... Mrs. Moretti..."

Recognition spread across her face.

Color drained from her cheeks.

"You..." she whispered.

Before she could continue, another figure emerged from the crowd.

Tall.

Impeccably dressed.

Terrifyingly composed.

Vincent Moretti.

The ballroom seemed to stop breathing.

He looked first at his mother.

Then at Emma.

Then at Victoria.

"What happened?" he asked.

Nobody moved.

Nobody answered.

Until Isabella spoke.

"This young woman protected me."

Vincent's eyes settled on Emma.

"You stood between my mother and danger?"

Emma wanted to disappear.

"I just did what anyone should have done."

Vincent studied her.

"No," he said quietly.

"Most people don't."

Without another word, he turned toward Victoria.

"You should leave."

Victoria stared at him in disbelief.

"Vincent, surely we can discuss this..."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

Which somehow made it more frightening.

"Leave."

For the first time in years, Victoria Langford understood what true power looked like.

And she obeyed.
