Chapter 3 – The Family's Darkest Secret
No one spoke.
Judge Amelia walked slowly toward the bassinets.
She gently touched each baby's tiny hand before turning toward Evelyn.
"You forged adoption documents."
Evelyn forced a smile.
"You don't understand—"
"I understand perfectly."
Amelia placed another folder on the hospital table.
"This isn't the first time."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Amelia opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
Hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Financial transfers.
Thirty-one years earlier...
Another young mother had given birth inside the same private hospital.
Her newborn son had disappeared only hours after delivery.
The child had supposedly died from respiratory failure.
He never had.
He had been illegally placed into another wealthy family desperate for an heir.
Daniel stared at the photographs.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
Amelia looked directly at Evelyn.
"You organized it."
Evelyn's lips trembled.
"You've spent decades choosing babies like business investments."
Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.
"What... are they talking about?"
Amelia slid one final DNA report across the table.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands shook.
He wasn't biologically Evelyn's son.
The room spun around him.
"My entire life..."
Evelyn finally broke.
"I did it for this family!"
"For our name!"
"For our legacy!"
Daniel stepped away from her.
"No."
"You did it for yourself."
Hospital security quietly placed handcuffs around Evelyn's wrists.

For the first time in decades...
No one obeyed her.
