Chapter 2 – The Name She Never Forgot The little boy held her gaze for a long moment before answering. "My mom." His voice was quiet, almost afraid the words might disappear if he spoke too loudly. "She said your name was Evelyn." The bride's breath caught. No one had called her that in connection with her past for almost nine years. Around them, the laughter from the wedding reception faded into meaningless background noise. The waiter stood frozen, suddenly realizing he had become invisible in a story much bigger than himself. Evelyn slowly knelt until she was eye level with the child. "What... what is your mother's name?" "Lily." The name struck her like a wave. Lily Harper. Her college roommate. Her closest friend. The woman who had disappeared without a trace after leaving the city. Evelyn remembered the night Lily had shown up at her apartment carrying a newborn baby wrapped in a faded blue blanket. "I'm leaving," Lily had whispered through tears. "If anything ever happens to me... promise you'll protect him." Evelyn had promised. But before sunrise, Lily was gone. She searched for months. Police found nothing. Every lead ended in silence. Now that same baby stood in front of her. Only he wasn't a baby anymore. He was an eight-year-old boy holding a dirty piece of bread like it was treasure. Tears filled Evelyn's eyes. "What happened to your mother?" The boy looked down. "She got sick." He swallowed hard. "She died three weeks ago." The world around Evelyn stopped. / Chapter 1 / 2 7

Chapter 3 – The Letter Hidden Inside the Photograph

Chapter 3 – The Letter Hidden Inside the Photograph

The old photograph trembled in Evelyn's hands.

Something felt strange.

The edges were thicker than ordinary paper.

Carefully, she unfolded the back.

A tiny handwritten letter had been hidden inside all these years.

The faded ink was unmistakably Lily's.

Evelyn,

If you're reading this, then I couldn't keep my promise to protect him.
Please don't let him grow up believing he was unwanted.
His father never knew he existed.
I was too afraid to tell him.
You were always the only person I trusted.
His name is Noah.
Please... save him.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

She remembered every word of the promise she had made.

And she had failed.

Until today.

She looked at the frightened little boy standing barefoot outside her own wedding.

"Noah..."

The child looked surprised.

"You know my name?"

She smiled through tears.

"I've known about you since the day you were born."

At that exact moment, the groom walked outside.

"Evelyn, everyone's waiting."

He stopped when he saw the boy.

"What happened?"

Evelyn slowly stood.

Her expression had completely changed.

"I'm not leaving him."

The groom looked confused.

"The ceremony starts in five minutes."

She looked at Noah.

Then back at the grand wedding hall.

"My wedding can wait."

May you like

"My promise can't."

For the first time all day, the wedding guests applauded—not for the bride's dress, but for the woman she truly was.
