CHAPTER 4 — A HERO'S REWARD

CHAPTER 4 — A HERO'S REWARD

The emergency veterinarian works through the night.

The family waits without speaking.

The little boy refuses to let go of the puppy's favorite red ball.

Hours later, the veterinarian finally walks into the waiting room.

A gentle smile appears.

"He's going to make it."

The boy bursts into tears of relief and runs into the recovery room.

The puppy slowly opens its eyes.

Its tail gives one weak wag.

The boy wraps his tiny arms around his best friend.

"You saved me."

The veterinarian quietly explains that the puppy survived because the snake's bite barely penetrated and treatment began just in time.

News of the rescue spreads through the small town.

Neighbors visit with treats and toys.

The local fire department presents the puppy with a small medal engraved:

"For Extraordinary Courage."

Months later, the forest behind the house is protected with secure fencing and warning signs.

The family never lets the little boy play there alone again.

Every afternoon, the boy and his loyal companion still play fetch together.

The same bright red ball flies through the sunshine.

But now, before every throw, the boy kneels down, hugs the puppy tightly, and whispers,

"My hero."

The puppy happily wags its tail.

Not because it understands the words.

But because it knows one simple truth.

The little boy is safe.

And that is all that ever mattered.
