Chapter 2 — The Housekeeper's Secret

Chapter 2 — The Housekeeper's Secret

Anna never resisted.

When Calvin's men approached the woods, she simply lowered her hands.

"I wondered how long before he finally saw."

She was escorted into Joseph's study.

She looked exhausted.

Cold.

Hungry herself.

Joseph placed the security footage onto the desk.

"You've been feeding my daughters."

Anna nodded.

"They've been starving."

"My staff feeds them every day."

"No."

"They photograph the food every day."

Silence.

Joseph's jaw tightened.

Anna slowly opened her canvas bag.

Inside were dozens of tiny drawings.

Crayon pictures.

Rosalyn had drawn them.

Each showed two bowls.

One crossed out.

One labeled "Anna."

Joseph flipped through them.

Then came folded napkins.

Small notes written in uneven pencil.

"Daddy works."

"I'm still hungry."

"Hilda says don't tell."

His hands began shaking.

Anna finally spoke.

"I worked here."

Joseph looked up.

"I was Elena's hospice nurse."

The room went silent.

"When your wife died, Hilda fired me."

"She said the girls no longer needed someone who loved them."

Anna swallowed.

"I couldn't stay away."

"I watched from the woods."

"I saw trays leaving full."

"I saw them returning empty."

"But the girls..."

"...were getting thinner."

"So I started bringing soup."

Joseph closed his eyes.

For two years...

He had signed thousands of dollars in grocery budgets.

While his daughters survived on stolen soup.

"Calvin."

"Yes, Boss."

"Lock every gate."

"No one leaves."

Twenty minutes later...

The entire household stood trembling inside the grand dining hall.

Hilda still smiled.

Until Joseph projected the security footage across the wall.

Nobody spoke.

Then came accounting records.

Fake invoices.

Duplicate receipts.

Missing deliveries.

Millions of dollars.

Stolen over two years.

Hilda finally broke.

"It wasn't supposed to hurt the children!"

"They wouldn't eat anyway!"

"You were never home!"

Joseph walked toward her.

Calm.

Too calm.

"You stole from me."

She nodded weakly.

"You lied."

Another nod.

"You starved my daughters."

She collapsed before he touched her.

"I'll confess!"

"I'll tell everything!"

Joseph never raised his hand.

He simply looked at Calvin.

"Call the police."

"And every parent whose child ever trusted this woman."
