CHAPTER 2 — The Girl Who Shouldn't Exist Lucas never took the money back. The thick stack of cash remained suspended between them for another second before he slowly lowered his hand. His eyes never left the little girl. "You said she knows you," he said quietly. "How?" The child glanced past him at the bride. Valeria's perfect smile had completely disappeared. She looked as though she had seen a ghost. The wedding planner whispered nervously, "Ms. Valeria... everyone is waiting." She never answered. Lucas noticed something he had never seen before. His fiancée was trembling. Not dramatically. Just enough for the bouquet in her hands to shake. The lawyer stepped forward quickly. "This is ridiculous," he said with a practiced smile. "She's obviously a homeless child trying to ruin the ceremony." He reached into his wallet. "I'll handle this." The girl immediately stepped backward. "Don't let him touch me." Lucas turned. "Why?" "Because he lies for money." The lawyer's smile tightened. "Lucas, this is absurd." The girl slowly reached into the pocket of her oversized hoodie. Several guards instinctively moved closer. Instead of a weapon... She pulled out an old silver locket. Its chain was broken. Its surface was scratched from years of use. She held it toward Lucas. "Open it." Lucas frowned but accepted it. Inside were two tiny photographs. One showed a much younger Valeria standing beside the very same lawyer nearly ten years earlier. The second photo made Lucas stop breathing. Valeria was holding a newborn baby. Written across the back in faded ink were four simple words. My daughter, Lily. Lucas looked up. "You told me you'd never had children." Valeria's lips parted. No sound came out. The little girl quietly spoke. "My name is Lily." Silence swallowed the church. Then she added the sentence that shattered everything. "I'm the daughter she buried." Gasps spread through the guests. Valeria suddenly screamed. "She's lying!" But her voice sounded desperate instead of angry. Lucas slowly looked from Lily... to Valeria... to the lawyer. For the first time in years... he no longer knew who he was about to marry. / Chapter 1 / 2 17

CHAPTER 3 — The Grave That Was Empty

"No."

Valeria shook her head violently.

"This is insanity."

The lawyer quickly stepped beside her.

"Lucas, this child needs psychiatric help."

Lily looked directly at him.

"You forged the death certificate."

His face froze.

Lucas noticed it immediately.

"You know what she's talking about."

The lawyer recovered quickly.

"I have represented your fiancée for years."

Lily interrupted.

"You represented my grandfather."

Everyone fell silent.

"My grandfather paid you to make me disappear."

Lucas stared at her.

"Who is your grandfather?"

The answer came softly.

"Eduardo Salazar."

The name hit the crowd like lightning.

Eduardo Salazar.

One of the wealthiest real estate magnates in the state.

Valeria had once told Lucas her father had died years earlier.

Another lie.

Lily continued.

"When my mother got pregnant, my grandfather said a child would destroy the family's reputation."

Lucas felt sick.

"So what happened?"

Valeria closed her eyes.

"Don't..."

But Lily continued anyway.

"They took me away the day I was born."

She pointed toward the lawyer.

"He signed papers saying I died from complications."

Then she looked at Valeria.

"You watched."

Tears rolled down Valeria's face.

"I was nineteen..."

"My father threatened to kill both of us."

"You don't understand."

Lily's expression never changed.

"I understand."

"You let them take me."

The church stood completely still.

Then another voice interrupted.

"She's telling the truth."

Everyone turned.

An elderly nun slowly climbed the church steps.

In her trembling hands was a worn leather folder.

"I worked at Saint Catherine's Children's Home."

She looked directly at Lucas.

"This child arrived there under another name."

She opened the folder.

Inside were adoption records.

Medical files.

Birth certificates.

Photographs.

Every document carried the same lawyer's signature.

Lucas slowly closed his eyes.
