Chapter 2: The Family's Darkest Crime

Daniel placed the papers on a nearby table.

Every guest leaned forward.

Reporters covering the society wedding immediately began recording.

The first document revealed everything.

Thirty years ago, Margaret had witnessed a financial fraud scheme run by Vanessa's father and grandfather.

Millions of dollars had been stolen from investors.

Margaret threatened to tell authorities.

The next day she was arrested for a crime she never committed.

False evidence.

False witnesses.

A corrupted investigation.

She spent years in prison while her son was placed into foster care.

Vanessa stared at her father in disbelief.

"No..."

Her voice trembled.

"Tell me this isn't true."

But he couldn't answer.

Because every document carried official government seals.

Every signature was real.

Then Margaret revealed the final secret.

"I came today because I wanted to see my son happy."

The room fell silent.

"I carried flowers because I couldn't afford a gift."

Tears filled many guests' eyes.

"And when she humiliated me..."

Margaret glanced at Vanessa.

"...I stayed quiet because I didn't want to ruin his wedding."

Vanessa's hands began shaking.

For the first time, she realized the woman she had insulted was the victim.

Not the enemy.

And her own family had built their fortune on stolen lives.
