Chapter 2: The Fall of the Masks
Chapter 1: The Name No One Dared Forget
The silence inside the ballroom became unbearable.
Hundreds of guests stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers, unable to comprehend what they had just witnessed.
Victor Hawthorne, the city's most feared business tycoon, remained bent forward in a trembling bow.
His wife, Isabella, stared at him in horror.
"Victor..." she whispered. "What are you doing?"
He ignored her.
Instead, his eyes remained fixed on the young man in the plain white shirt.
"Please forgive us, Mr. Carter," Victor said, his voice shaking. "We didn't recognize you."
The guests gasped.
The name spread across the ballroom like wildfire.
Carter.
Ethan Carter.
Years ago, Ethan's family had built the financial foundation upon which many of the city's powerful empires stood. While others sought publicity, the Carter family operated in silence, investing quietly and helping shape industries from behind closed doors.
Few people knew what Ethan looked like.
Those who did never forgot.
Isabella laughed nervously.
"This has to be a joke," she said. "He's dressed like a common guest."
Ethan finally looked at her.
"Is wealth measured by the fabric on someone's back?" he asked calmly. "Or by the character they carry inside?"
No one answered.
Victor lowered his head even further.
"My company exists because your grandfather saved my father from bankruptcy," he admitted before everyone. "Without the Carter family, I would have nothing."
The room erupted into whispers.
For years, Victor had presented himself as the man who built everything alone.
Now, the truth had shattered the legend.
Ethan offered a small smile.
"I didn't come here to expose anyone," he said. "I came because the groom invited me as an old friend."
Then his gaze shifted toward Isabella.
"But sometimes arrogance reveals what success hides."

For the first time in years, Isabella had no words.
Only fear.
