Chapter 2: The Empire of Lies
Chapter 1: The Woman Who Refused to Die
Leo's whisper echoed through Valerie's mind long after Marcus and Victoria left the room.
"Don't move, Mom. I already called for help."
For the first time since the accident, hope pierced the darkness.
The next forty-eight hours became a silent war.
Valerie remained motionless whenever Marcus or Victoria entered the room. She listened.
And what she heard chilled her to the bone.
On the second evening, Victoria arrived alone.
She believed Valerie was still unconscious.
That mistake would become her downfall.
Victoria sat beside the hospital bed and crossed her legs.
"We're almost finished," she said while speaking on her phone.
Valerie recognized the voice on the other end.
Marcus.
"The insurance payout clears next week," Marcus said.
"And the will?" Victoria asked.
Marcus laughed.
"There is no problem if she's dead."
Valerie felt her heart hammering against her ribs.
Victoria lowered her voice.
"What about the lawyer?"
"Lawson won't matter."
"Are you sure?"
"I already arranged everything."
There was a long silence.
Then Marcus spoke words that froze Valerie's blood.
"If the coma doesn't finish her, we'll finish her ourselves."
Victoria didn't object.
She laughed.
Valerie suddenly understood the horrifying truth.
The accident had never been enough for them.
They were planning a second murder.
The following morning, a woman entered the room carrying a leather briefcase.
"Valerie?"
The voice was calm.
Professional.
Familiar.
Ms. Lawson.
Valerie's lawyer.
Leo stood beside her.
The boy looked exhausted, but his eyes lit up when he saw his mother's finger move again.
Ms. Lawson approached carefully.
"If you can hear me, Valerie, blink twice."
Valerie gathered every ounce of strength.
Blink.
Blink.
Leo burst into tears.
"Oh my God."
Ms. Lawson immediately pressed the emergency call button.
Within minutes, doctors flooded the room.
Tests were ordered.
Scans were performed.
Questions filled the air.
And then came the miracle.
Valerie was conscious.
Weak.
Barely able to speak.
But alive.
When Marcus arrived that evening, expecting another routine visit, he found Valerie sitting upright in bed.
Their eyes met.
The color drained from his face.
For the first time in twelve days, Marcus looked afraid.
"Valerie..." he whispered.
She stared directly at him.
"I remember everything."
The room became silent.
May you like
Marcus knew.
The game had changed.
