Chapter 4: The Family We Choose
Chapter 4: The Family We Choose
One year later...
Spring sunlight poured through the large windows of a quiet lakeside café.
Sophie laughed as she chased pigeons along the sidewalk, the faint scar hidden beneath her growing blonde hair.
The scar would always remain.
But it no longer defined her.
Evelyn watched from a nearby table, a cup of coffee warming her hands.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A prison counselor spoke calmly.
"Preston Bennett would like to meet with you."
Evelyn looked toward Sophie.
Her daughter was helping another little girl gather flowers that had fallen from a nearby planter.
Kindness.
Even after everything.
Evelyn smiled softly.
"No."
She ended the call.
Some doors deserved to stay closed.
Weeks later, the civil trial concluded.
The hotel footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence left no room for argument.
Preston received a lengthy prison sentence.
Richard permanently lost his partnership at the law firm after evidence surfaced that he had attempted to pressure witnesses.
Carolyn sold the family home to pay mounting legal expenses.
For the first time in decades, nobody remained to protect the family's lies.
Evelyn never celebrated their downfall.
She simply walked away from it.
That summer, she and Sophie moved into a small house near Lake Michigan.
There were no crystal chandeliers.
No grand ballrooms.
No people pretending to love one another.
Only peace.
One evening, Sophie climbed into Evelyn's lap and wrapped her arms around her.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Are we still a family?"
Evelyn looked into her daughter's bright blue eyes and smiled.
"The strongest family isn't built by blood."
She held Sophie close as the sun disappeared beyond the lake.
"It's built by the people who choose to protect each other."
Sophie rested her head against her mother's shoulder.
"I choose you."
Evelyn kissed the top of her head.
"And I'll choose you..."
She smiled as the waves rolled gently onto the shore.
"...every single day for the rest of my life."
The Bennett name had given Evelyn a lifetime of pain.
But walking away from it gave her something far more valuable.
A future.
May you like
And for the first time, neither she nor Sophie had to beg for love.
They were finally home.
