Chapter 2 — Every Secret Comes to Light
Andrew stared at Clara as if he had never known her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Clara met his eyes without anger.
"Because I wanted to know whether you would choose me before you knew what I owned."
His silence became the answer.
One of the estate attorneys stepped forward.
"There is one additional matter."
The ballroom quieted again.
He removed another folder.
"This wedding was scheduled under a commercial venue agreement."
He looked directly at Patricia.
"Mrs. Whitlock intentionally destroyed insured property."
He then faced Andrew.
"You witnessed the act."
"And failed to intervene."
Patricia laughed bitterly.
"You can't possibly expect me to pay millions for a dress."
The attorney remained expressionless.
"The insurance company can."
"And they already have the security footage."
Almost on cue, every large display screen surrounding the ballroom illuminated.
The estate's security recordings began to play.
High-definition.
Crystal clear.
Patricia grabbing Clara's gown.
Patricia smiling.
Patricia tearing it deliberately.
Andrew standing only a few feet away.
Watching.
Doing nothing.
No one could deny what they saw.
Guests slowly stepped away from the Whitlock family.
Sponsors quietly left the head table.
Business associates avoided eye contact.
Within minutes...
Patricia's social circle had dissolved.
Andrew reached toward Clara.
"I'm sorry."
She stepped back.
"No."
"You regret getting caught."
The words landed harder than any courtroom verdict.
Outside...
Luxury cars began arriving.
Not reporters.
Lawyers.
Insurance investigators.
Corporate auditors.
