Chapter 2: Blood and Fear

Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Walls

For the next two weeks, Dominic Russo came home before sunset.

Nobody missed it.

The guards noticed.

The staff noticed.

Most of all, Bea noticed.

At first she told herself it was coincidence.

But coincidences didn't explain why Dominic suddenly appeared during Leo's afternoon lessons.

Or why he sat silently in the library while Bea read stories to the little boy.

Or why every time someone made a cruel joke about Bea's weight, Dominic somehow happened to be standing nearby.

The first incident happened during a charity gala hosted at the mansion.

Bea had spent the evening upstairs with Leo while wealthy guests filled the ballroom below.

When the boy finally fell asleep, she slipped downstairs to make tea.

She nearly turned around when she heard voices.

Mrs. Bell was speaking with one of the guests.

"A nanny like her should be grateful for employment," the woman laughed. "Let's be honest. No wealthy man would ever look twice at someone built like that."

The women chuckled.

Bea froze.

The familiar humiliation settled into her chest.

Then another voice cut through the room.

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

"Interesting."

Every head turned.

Dominic stood near the doorway holding a glass of whiskey.

The room instantly fell silent.

The woman laughed nervously.

"I didn't realize you were there, Mr. Russo."

"I was."

His eyes never left hers.

"And since we're discussing appearances, perhaps we should discuss yours."

The smile vanished from her face.

Dominic stepped forward.

"Because unlike Beatrice Gallagher, your ugliness isn't on the outside."

The ballroom went completely silent.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The woman turned red.

Five minutes later she left the party.

Bea watched from the staircase, stunned.

For the first time in years, someone had defended her.

Not out of pity.

Not out of obligation.

But because they genuinely believed she deserved better.

When Dominic looked up and found her standing there, neither of them looked away.

Something changed in that moment.

Something neither of them could stop.
