Chapter 1: The Woman They Thought Was Broken
The penthouse that had once echoed with laughter and promises was now filled with the metallic clicks of handcuffs and the sharp voices of federal agents.
Ethan Carter struggled violently as two agents escorted him toward the elevator.
"This is a mistake!" he shouted. "Do you know who I am?"
No one answered.
The same employees who had once rushed to open doors for him now avoided his eyes.
Beside the shattered wine glass, Victoria Carter stood frozen.
Only moments earlier, she had been the discarded wife.
Pregnant.
Humiliated.
Told she was no longer worthy of standing beside the man she had helped build an empire with.
Now, she watched that empire collapse in real time.
The mistress, Vanessa, clung desperately to Ethan's arm.
"Tell them something!" she screamed. "Make them stop!"
For the first time in years, Ethan looked afraid.
His confident smile vanished.
His expensive suit couldn't hide the panic dripping from every word.
As the elevator doors closed behind him, his eyes met Victoria's.
"Please," he whispered. "You have to help me."
Victoria rested her hand against her baby bump.
The tears on her cheeks had dried.
"I begged you to remember who stood beside you before the money," she said softly.
