Chapter 3 — The Wedding Everyone Remembered
An hour later, the ballroom looked different.
The ruined cake had been cleared away.
The florist rearranged fresh white roses around the dance floor.
The chef surprised everyone with hundreds of beautifully plated desserts prepared for the reception.
One by one, guests began smiling again.
The groom took his bride's hand.
"I thought tonight was ruined."
She looked around the room.
Children were laughing.
Families were talking.
Friends were dancing.
She shook her head.
"No."
"Now they'll remember what mattered."
Before leaving with the officers, the little boy stopped in front of the bride.
Holding a tiny sugar flower he had picked up from the floor, he offered it to her with trembling hands.
"I'm really sorry."
She accepted it.
Then hugged him gently.
"Next time..."
"Help build something instead of knocking it down."
He nodded through his tears.
"I will."
Months later, a handwritten letter arrived at the couple's home.
Inside was a drawing.
A wedding cake.
Standing perfectly upright.
Beside it were two stick figures smiling.
At the bottom, written in careful, uneven handwriting, were the words:
"Thank you for teaching me instead of hating me."
The bride placed the drawing inside a frame.
