Chapter 9 - Adrian stared at the tape bearing his name.He didn't understand.

“Why would my father record this?”
Elena shook her head.
“He didn't.”
“Then who did?”
She looked toward the vault.
“Evelyn.”
Adrian inserted the tape.
The screen flickered.
Evelyn appeared.
Not the Evelyn from the first recording.
This Evelyn was exhausted.
Terrified.
There was blood on her cheek.
“Adrian…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, I'm probably dead.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You've been dead for fourteen months.”
On the tape, Evelyn continued.
“There are things I never told you.”
She leaned closer.
“I was not kidnapped.”
Adrian froze.
“I chose to disappear.”
The video paused.
Then resumed.
“I did it because someone inside your house was feeding information to your enemies.”
Adrian remembered.
Victor.
The black watch.
But Evelyn continued.
“It wasn't Victor.”
Adrian frowned.
“The person closest to you is not your security chief.”
His eyes moved toward Elena.
Not Elena.
Someone closer.
“It's someone the girls love.”
Adrian's face changed.
Then the tape displayed a photograph.
A woman.
Cora Bell.
Their former housekeeper.
She had left eight months earlier.
Adrian stared.
“She was here for twelve years.”
“She raised you when I couldn't.”
“She knows every room.”
“Every schedule.”
“Every password.”
“She was never just staff.”
Adrian paused the video.
“Where is Cora?”
Elena looked frightened.
“She disappeared last week.”
Adrian's pulse jumped.
The tape resumed.
Evelyn whispered:
“Cora works for the organization that wants the children.”
Adrian looked toward the girls.
“The organization?”
“It isn't the FBI.”
“It isn't the Vale family.”
“It is older.”
Evelyn looked over her shoulder.
“They call themselves The Black Ledger.”
Adrian had heard the name.
Only once.
Years ago.
A rumor among businessmen.
A ghost organization that manipulated corporate collapses and political elections.
Evelyn continued.
“They don't kill powerful people.”
“They replace them.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
“They take the heirs.”
The screen went black.
Then a new clip appeared.
Cora.
Standing beside Victor.
Adrian stared.
Victor wasn't dead.
The vault fight hadn't killed him.
The video showed them speaking.
Cora handed him a folder.
Victor said:
“The girls?”
Cora answered:
“Ready.”
Then the screen went black.
Adrian stared at Victor's name.
“Victor has been working for them.”
Elena shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“He infiltrated them.”
Adrian looked confused.
“He's been trying to destroy them from inside.”
“So why betray me?”
“Because they threatened his son.”
Adrian sat down.
Everything had become tangled.
Lies inside lies.
He looked at the children.
“Who else knew?”
Olivia raised her hand.
“Mom.”
“She told you?”
“Yes.”
“Everything?”
“No.”
“What didn't she tell you?”
Olivia looked toward the wall.
“The basement.”
Adrian frowned.
“What basement?”
“The basement underneath the old nursery.”
“The nursery doesn't have a basement.”
“It does.”
They returned to the mansion.
The federal raid had ended.
The estate looked destroyed.
Windows shattered.
Smoke hung in the halls.
Adrian walked into the old nursery.
Olivia stopped at a rug.
“Here.”
They moved it.
Beneath it was a trapdoor.
Adrian opened it.
A ladder descended into darkness.
He went first.
Below was a tiny room.
On the wall were children's drawings.
All three girls had drawn the same thing.
A family.
But there was one extra person.
A fourth child.
Adrian stared.
“Who is that?”
Nora pointed.
“That's Emma.”
“Who is Emma?”
The girls looked at each other.
Sophie whispered:
“She was here before us.”
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
“Where is she now?”
Silence.
Then Olivia said:
“Mom said Emma is the reason Daddy forgot.”
Adrian looked around.
On the floor sat a photograph.
Four little girls.
Olivia.
Sophie.
Nora.
And another child.
A fourth daughter.
The back of the photo had one sentence.
EMMA VALE, 6 YEARS OLD.
MISSING.
Adrian stared.
He had no memory of Emma.
Then something moved in the darkness behind them.
A girl's voice whispered:
“Daddy?”
Adrian slowly turned.
A little girl stood at the bottom of the stairs.
May you like
She looked exactly like Evelyn.
And exactly like him.
