Chapter 1 - Six hours before anyone expected him home, Adrian Vale stepped into his Long Island mansion with a loaded gun beneath his coat and dried blood on his cuff. The house was supposed to be empty except for the staff.

Instead, he heard singing.

Soft.

Childish.

Almost painfully sweet.

Adrian stopped in the marble foyer.

“ You are my sunshine…”

The voice came from the east wing.

His grip tightened beneath his coat.

For fourteen months, doctors had told him his three daughters were too traumatized to speak after their mother, Evelyn, died.

Not one word.

Not a scream.

Not even a whisper.

Yet the singing continued.

Adrian moved silently toward the half-open playroom door.

Sunlight spilled across the floor.

Olivia, seven.

Sophie, six.

Nora, five.

All three were barefoot.

All three were singing.

Adrian felt the world tilt.

He pushed the door open.

The girls saw him.

The song stopped instantly.

Olivia's lips snapped shut.

Sophie dropped the doll in her hands.

Nora backed away.

Their nanny, Elena Mercer, turned around.

The color drained from her face.

Adrian stared at his children.

Then at Elena.

“What did I just hear?”

Elena opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You told me they couldn't speak.”

“I know.”

“You told me they hadn't spoken since Evelyn died.”

“I know.”

“Then explain why my daughters were singing.”

Elena looked at the girls.

Olivia's eyes were filled with warning.

Finally Elena whispered, “They never lost their voices.”

Adrian felt something cold move through his chest.

“What?”

“They stopped using them.”

“Why?”

Elena swallowed.

“Because they believed speaking would get you killed.”

The room went silent.

Adrian slowly removed his hand from beneath his coat.

“Who told them that?”

Elena said nothing.

“Nanny.”

Her eyes met his.

“They said there was a bad man.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You've been taking care of them for fourteen months. You're telling me you don't know?”

“I've been trying to protect them.”

“From whom?”

Elena looked toward the windows.

That was when Adrian noticed the silver music box sitting on the table.

He frowned.

“That wasn't here before.”

Elena's face changed.

“Nora brought it.”

Adrian walked toward it.

The music box was old.

Polished silver.

A ballerina stood frozen beneath the glass.

He recognized the engraving on the lid.

E.M.V.

Evelyn Marie Vale.

His dead wife's initials.

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

“That belonged to Evelyn.”

Elena nodded.

“It was found three weeks ago.”

“Found where?”

“Nora found it.”

“Where?”

“In the basement.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Why would Evelyn's things be in the basement?”

Elena hesitated.

“I don't know.”

He opened the lid.

The ballerina began turning.

A thin melody filled the room.

Then came a click.

The bottom panel lifted.

Inside sat a tiny memory card.

Adrian stared at it.

Olivia immediately stepped backward.

Sophie grabbed Nora's hand.

Adrian noticed.

“You've seen this.”

None of them answered.

He crouched in front of Olivia.

“Sweetheart.”

Her chin trembled.

“Who showed you?”

Silence.

“Olivia.”

She looked at Elena.

Elena closed her eyes.

That was answer enough.

Adrian took the card.

Before he could say anything else, Nora whispered.

“If Daddy hears us…”

Everyone froze.

It was the first sentence she had spoken in fourteen months.

Nora stared directly at Adrian.

“The bad man comes back.”

Adrian's stomach dropped.

“What bad man?”

She looked at the ceiling.

Then toward the hallway.

“He watches.”

Adrian stood.

His hand moved toward the gun.

“Who watches?”

Nora squeezed her sister's hand.

“He wears a black watch.”

Adrian's mind raced.

He had dozens of employees.

Security personnel.

Drivers.

Managers.

Doormen.

He needed a name.

“Nora, look at Daddy.”

She did.

“Who is he?”

Her lips trembled.

But Elena suddenly stepped between them.

“Don't push her.”

Adrian's eyes flashed.

“You knew.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“You let me believe my children couldn't speak.”

“They were terrified.”

“Terrified of whom?”

Elena looked at the card in Adrian's hand.

Then whispered:

“That's what the card will tell you.”

Adrian turned toward the desk.

He grabbed his tablet.

“No.”

Elena stopped him.

“What?”

“You can't watch it here.”

“Why?”

“Because if they know you've seen it…”

She didn't finish.

A strange sound came from the ceiling.

A faint electrical click.

Adrian looked up.

The security camera.

Its indicator light had just gone black.

He pulled out his phone.

No signal.

He walked toward the window.

Outside, every security light on the property turned off simultaneously.

Darkness swallowed the grounds.

Adrian's pulse jumped.

Then his phone vibrated.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

He looked at the screen.

One message.

YOU CAME HOME TOO SOON.

Adrian stared at it.

Another message appeared.

LEAVE THE GIRLS AND WALK TO THE FRONT GATE.

A third followed.

OR THEY DIE.

A scream exploded from upstairs.

Nora.

Except this time it wasn't fear.

It was fury.

“DADDY!”

Adrian drew his gun.

He ran.

Behind him, Elena shouted for him to stop.

He reached the stairs.

Halfway up, a door at the far end of the corridor opened.

A man stepped out.

Security uniform.

Gun in hand.

Victor Dane.

Adrian stopped.

Victor had been his oldest lieutenant.

His closest friend.

The man who had stood beside him through business wars, threats, funerals, and Evelyn's death.

Victor looked directly at Adrian.

Then smiled.

But he wasn't looking at Adrian.

He was staring toward the children's bedroom.

Adrian raised his gun.

“Put it down.”

Victor didn't move.

“Mr. Vale.”

His voice was strangely calm.

“You were never supposed to come home tonight.”

Then Victor pulled the trigger.

The shot never came.

Instead, the bullet struck the wall beside Adrian's head.

A warning.

Victor turned and ran toward the children's room.

Adrian chased him.

He reached the doorway.

Empty.

The room was dark.

May you like

The window was open.

And all three girls were gone.
