Chapter 7 - Adrian stared at Evelyn.“You signed an order to kill me?”

Evelyn nodded.

“I believed you were already compromised.”

“You could have told me.”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Every night you thought you were dreaming.”

Adrian remembered.

Fourteen months of nightmares.

Evelyn standing in the hallway.

Blood on her dress.

Telling him to run.

He had thought grief was making him hallucinate.

“You were warning me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why send assassins?”

“I never did.”

Adrian looked at Victor's weapon.

“Who did?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Nora did.

“Grandma.”

Everyone looked at her.

The old woman appeared at the far end of the tunnel.

She had followed them.

“How did you get here?”

She smiled.

“I built it.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“Stay back.”

She leaned on her cane.

“You always point weapons at family.”

“Family doesn't fake their deaths.”

“Family does what is necessary.”

Adrian's face twisted.

“You destroyed my life.”

“No.”

She pointed at Evelyn.

“She did.”

Evelyn looked down.

The old woman continued.

“She loved you.”

“That is why she betrayed you.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“What does that mean?”

“She knew your father planned to transfer the family network to you.”

Adrian frowned.

“I don't want it.”

“You already own it.”

“What?”

His grandmother smiled.

“The entire system was transferred into your name eighteen years ago.”

Adrian stared.

“You mean my companies?”

“Not the companies.”

“The network.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“The people who own judges.”

“The people who control banks.”

“The people who erase identities.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“You're saying my family built a criminal empire.”

His grandmother nodded.

“And you inherited it.”

“No.”

“You've been using it without knowing.”

“How?”

“Every problem disappeared because they made it disappear.”

Adrian suddenly remembered.

Business competitors ruined overnight.

Lawsuits vanishing.

Investigations ending.

Witnesses changing statements.

He had always thought it was money.

It wasn't.

It was power.

A deeper power.

A hidden machine.

Then Elena stepped forward.

“There is one thing she isn't telling you.”

The grandmother glared.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“The ledger isn't just proof.”

“What is it?”

“A key.”

“To what?”

“The account.”

“What account?”

“The original Vale account.”

Adrian frowned.

“The one containing the real fortune.”

His grandmother laughed.

“Now you understand.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“How much?”

She hesitated.

“More than your entire family thinks you own.”

“Where?”

Elena pointed behind him.

“The lake.”

Adrian stared.

“You built a vault under the lake.”

“Yes.”

“What's inside?”

“Records.”

“Anything else?”

Elena's face changed.

“Your father's final message.”

Adrian's pulse quickened.

“My father?”

“He knew what would happen.”

“Can we get to it?”

“We have ten minutes.”

“Why?”

“Because the FBI is not actually coming for the family.”

“What are they coming for?”

Elena looked at the girls.

“For them.”

Adrian's stomach turned.

“Why?”

“They're the only living witnesses to the original operation.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“I know where the vault is.”

Adrian stared.

“How?”

“Mom showed us.”

She walked toward the end of the tunnel.

At the wall, she pressed her hand against a stone.

Nothing happened.

Then Nora pressed hers beside it.

The wall opened.

Behind it stood a massive steel door.

On the door were three handprints.

One large.

Two small.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“What happens if they open it?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father speaks.”

The steel door unlocked.

Inside was a room filled with documents.

And one chair.

A tape recorder sat on it.

Adrian walked toward it.

He pressed play.

His father's voice filled the room.

“If my son Adrian is listening to this…”

A pause.

“…then the girls have already told him the truth.”

Adrian looked at Olivia.

His father continued.

“Adrian, your mother did not die in an accident.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“She was murdered.”

The room went silent.

Then the voice added:

“By your own brother.”

Adrian turned.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

Blood covered his shirt.

May you like

He was smiling.

And in his hand was Elena's phone.
