Chapter 13 - Ramon couldn't look away.The footage continued.

Buildings burned.
Bodies lay across the street.
Young Rafael stood in the center.
Not afraid.
Not horrified.
Calm.
A voice asked:
“Did you do this?”
Young Rafael answered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To start a war.”
Ramon covered his mouth.
Emma watched him.
“You were bad.”
Ramon nodded.
“I was.”
Mateo stepped closer.
“No.”
Ramon looked at him.
“You weren't bad.”
“Then what was I?”
“A child pretending to be a monster.”
Ramon stared.
Mateo explained the massacre was staged.
The bodies were people already condemned to death by The Circle.
The buildings were abandoned.
No civilians died.
Rafael had created the massacre to convince the Circle that he was willing to do anything.
Then he gained control.
He planned to destroy the organization from within.
But Arturo interfered.
Ramon finally understood.
Every monster in his childhood story had been part of the disguise.
He had been playing a role for years.
A role so convincing that even he forgot it.
Evelyn's voice returned.
“You're almost there.”
“Where?”
“The beginning.”
A door opened behind them.
Evelyn stood there.
No guards.
No weapon.
Only tears in her eyes.
Ramon stared.
“You.”
She nodded.
“We were supposed to do this together.”
“Why did you hide everything?”
“Because somebody was listening.”
“Who?”
Evelyn looked toward Mateo.
“Your mother.”
Ramon turned.
His mother stepped from the shadows.
She raised a gun.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“I knew it.”
Ramon looked at his mother.
“Did you betray me?”
She shook her head.
“I betrayed Arturo.”
“Why?”
“Because he betrayed you first.”
She revealed the final truth.
Arturo had never intended to protect Ramon.
He had intended to control him.
Arturo wanted the Black Vault for himself.
He wanted to rule the people who ruled The Circle.
Ramon's mother had discovered the plan.
She and Evelyn created a counterplan.
They erased Ramon’s memory.
They hid Emma.
They waited.
Years passed.
Then the Circle found them.
The forest attack had been the trigger.
The hanging.
The symbol.
The key.
All engineered to awaken Ramon.
Ramon stared at Evelyn.
“So all of this was planned.”
“Yes.”
“The little girl.”
“Yes.”
“My rescue.”
“Yes.”
“The vault.”
“Yes.”
Ramon's face hardened.
“What about the people who died?”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“Some were real casualties.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because war is never clean.”
Ramon hated the answer.
But he understood it.
The building shook again.
Evelyn looked at the clock.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the entrance.
“The founders.”
Ramon raised his gun.
Outside, helicopters appeared.
Black vehicles surrounded the facility.
Men in military uniforms exited.
At their center stood a woman in white.
She entered slowly.
Ramon recognized her face from hundreds of photographs.
A woman whose identity had been erased from every public record.
The true head of the organization.
She looked at Ramon.
“Hello, Rafael.”
Ramon aimed.
She smiled.
“You think you know what The Circle is.”
She stepped closer.
“You don't.”
“Then tell me.”
She looked at Emma.
“We created it before you were born.”
Ramon's eyes narrowed.
“Who are you?”
The woman answered:
“Your grandmother.”
Ramon froze.
May you like
She smiled.
“And I have been waiting twenty-four years to finish what you started.”
