Chapter 12 - Ramon had believed he was born in Chicago. The records said so.

The hospital confirmed it.
His mother had told the same story.
But now every document was suspect.
They traveled north.
To a remote property in Wisconsin.
An abandoned psychiatric facility sat between pine trees.
Emma stared at the building.
“This is it.”
Ramon asked:
“How do you know?”
“I remember the smell.”
Inside, the halls were covered in peeling paint.
Old patient rooms.
Broken equipment.
Then Ramon found a room marked:
WARD 7.
Inside was a chair.
The same chair from his memories.
He stood before it.
A projector activated.
A video played.
A doctor spoke.
“Subject Rafael Cruz, age eight.”
Ramon watched himself sitting in the chair.
The doctor asked:
“Do you know who you are?”
Young Ramon answered:
“Rafael.”
“Who is your father?”
“Arturo.”
“Who is Mateo?”
“My brother.”
“Who is Emma?”
“My promise.”
The doctor smiled.
Then asked:
“Who controls The Circle?”
Young Ramon stared into the camera.
“I do.”
Ramon's heart dropped.
The doctor continued.
“And why are you giving control to others?”
Young Ramon whispered:
“Because I'm going to disappear.”
The video ended.
Ramon understood.
He hadn't been manipulated.
He had planned his own disappearance.
He had created a false identity.
The Ortega empire.
The fake death.
The missing memories.
All of it.
He had sacrificed himself to infiltrate The Circle.
But something had gone wrong.
Someone had taken control.
Evelyn.
Ramon realized she wasn't his enemy.
She was his original partner.
The woman calling him had been trying to restore the plan.
Then Emma found a hidden door.
Inside was a nursery.
Dust covered the toys.
On the wall were photographs.
Ramon.
Mateo.
Emma's mother.
Arturo.
Evelyn.
Together.
A family that never officially existed.
Ramon found a handwritten note.
Rafael,
If you are reading this, Evelyn failed to wake you.
Do not trust Arturo.
Ramon stopped.
A second line:
He is the one who betrayed you.
Ramon's face changed.
Arturo.
His father.
The man who supposedly protected him.
The man who died in his arms.
He had betrayed him.
But why?
A hidden recording played.
Arturo's voice.
“I couldn't let Rafael finish the plan.”
Another voice.
His mother's.
“You promised.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw what he was becoming.”
Ramon's mother cried.
“You can't stop him.”
“I can.”
The recording ended.
Ramon understood.
Arturo had erased his memories because he feared Rafael would destroy everything.
But Arturo didn't realize the Circle had already corrupted itself.
Mateo entered the room.
“You finally see it.”
Ramon turned.
“You knew?”
Mateo nodded.
“Long before you.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know which version of you would wake up.”
Ramon stared.
“Are you with me?”
Mateo smiled.
“I always was.”
Emma ran to him.
“Uncle Mateo.”
Mateo knelt.
“You remembered.”
She nodded.
“Everything.”
Ramon looked between them.
“What happens now?”
Mateo answered:
“We go underground.”
“Why?”
“Because the people who built the Circle are coming.”
Suddenly, the facility lights came on.
All doors locked.
A woman's voice echoed through the speakers.
“Rafael.”
Ramon looked up.
Evelyn.
“You've found the truth.”
The building shook.
Explosions.
Windows shattered.
Mateo grabbed Emma.
Ramon reached for his gun.
Evelyn continued:
“There's one final memory you haven't recovered.”
Ramon stared.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“You were the one who ordered the first massacre.”
Ramon's face went pale.
“What massacre?”
Evelyn whispered:
“The night the Cruz family died.”
The screen changed.
A recording began.
A young Rafael stood in front of burning buildings.
Behind him were dozens of bodies.
Ramon watched in horror.
May you like
Then his younger self turned toward the camera.
And smiled.
