Chapter 9: The Father Who Pulled the Strings

For several seconds, Charlotte could only stare at Alexander.
“Your father?”
Alexander didn't answer.
He was still holding the phone.
His hand was shaking.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“Alex.”
He looked at her.
“That was him.”
“Edward?”
Alexander nodded.
“Our father.”
Charlotte felt a strange pressure build inside her chest.
“But Dad is upstairs.”
“Yes.”
“He was with us.”
“Yes.”
“He told me he loved Mom.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Maybe he did.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander looked toward the tunnel.
“I don't know.”
The doctor suddenly spoke.
“You have to leave.”
Charlotte turned.
“Why?”
The old man looked terrified.
“Because he knows you're here.”
“Who?”
“Edward.”
Charlotte's heart stopped.
“He knows?”
The doctor nodded.
“He always knows.”
Alexander raised his weapon.
“Explain.”
The doctor backed away.
“Your father has been watching both of you for years.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
“He knew when you returned.”
“No.”
“He knew about the hotel.”
Charlotte's breathing became shallow.
“He knew about the attack?”
The doctor nodded.
“He authorized it.”
Charlotte stepped backward.
“No.”
Alexander stared at the doctor.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Charlotte's mind raced.
The hotel.
Victoria.
Marcus.
Richard.
The gunshot.
Daniel falling.
Could Edward really have orchestrated it?
The man who had hugged her only hours ago?
The man who had cried when he saw her?
The man who claimed to have spent twenty years trying to protect her?
Charlotte couldn't accept it.
“You said he was trapped.”
The doctor nodded.
“He was.”
“Then how could he control everything?”
“He wasn't a prisoner.”
Charlotte stared.
“What?”
“He was one of them.”
Silence.
Alexander's face went pale.
“You're saying our father joined the Crown Circle?”
The doctor shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Charlotte.
“He created it.”
Charlotte felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“What?”
The doctor continued.
“Your father was the first Architect.”
Alexander's eyes widened.
“No.”
“He built the network.”
“No.”
“He recruited the original members.”
“No!”
Alexander raised his weapon.
The doctor didn't move.
“You're lying.”
“I saw it myself.”
“Then why did he disappear?”
“Because Elena discovered what he had done.”
Charlotte stared.
“My mother found out.”
“Yes.”
“And she took us away.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she tell me he died?”
“Because she was terrified of him.”
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Memories came rushing back.
Her mother's silence.
The locked rooms.
The constant moves.
The way Elena always checked the windows before bedtime.
The way she never allowed Charlotte to tell strangers her full name.
The way she used to wake suddenly at night.
Charlotte had thought her mother was grieving.
Now she wondered if Elena had been hiding from someone.
From him.
Her father.
The doctor spoke again.
“Your mother tried to expose him.”
Charlotte opened her eyes.
“What happened?”
“She failed.”
“Why?”
“Because Edward found her first.”
Charlotte's stomach turned.
“What did he do?”
The doctor looked down.
“He threatened to take you.”
Charlotte's face went white.
“So she surrendered.”
“No.”
The doctor shook his head.
“She fought.”
“Then how did he stop her?”
“He couldn't.”
The doctor looked at Alexander.
“Your brother helped her.”
Alexander froze.
“What?”
“You were six.”
The doctor continued.
“You heard your father threatening your mother.”
Alexander stared into the distance.
“I remember…”
His voice trembled.
“I remember a door.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“And a suitcase.”
“Yes.”
“I remember Mom crying.”
“Yes.”
Alexander pressed a hand against his forehead.
“I remember Dad shouting.”
The doctor nodded.
“Your mother tried to escape with both of you.”
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“What happened?”
The doctor whispered:
“Only one child escaped with her.”
Charlotte looked at Alexander.
He was already crying.
“You.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.”
“You're saying Mom left Alexander behind?”
“No.”
The doctor looked at Charlotte.
“She couldn't.”
Charlotte's breathing stopped.
“Why?”
“Because your father had already taken him.”
Silence.
Charlotte stared at her brother.
Alexander looked devastated.
“All these years…”
He whispered.
“I thought Mom abandoned me.”
The doctor shook his head.
“She tried to save you.”
Alexander's eyes closed.
“She came back.”
“When?”
“Three months later.”
“Why didn't she take me?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Because Edward gave her a choice.”
Charlotte's heart pounded.
“What choice?”
“Leave Alexander with him…”
The doctor swallowed.
“…or lose Charlotte.”
Charlotte felt sick.
“My mother chose me.”
“No.”
The doctor looked at her.
“She chose both of you.”
He pulled another document from his coat.
“Your mother made a deal.”
Charlotte took it.
“What kind of deal?”
“She agreed to disappear.”
“In exchange for what?”
“The safety of her children.”
Charlotte stared at the document.
It was a handwritten agreement.
Elena's signature.
Edward's signature.
And beneath them was another name.
THE ARCHITECT.
Charlotte's hands trembled.
“What happened after?”
The doctor looked toward the tunnel entrance.
“They broke the agreement.”
Charlotte's voice became cold.
“They killed her.”
“Yes.”
“Because she was going to expose them.”
“Yes.”
Alexander looked at the doctor.
“Then why didn't you tell us?”
The doctor looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“You were afraid of Edward.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
The old man smiled sadly.
“Now I'm old enough to stop being afraid.”
A sudden gunshot rang through the tunnel.
The doctor's body jerked.
Charlotte screamed.
He collapsed.
Alexander grabbed Charlotte and pulled her behind the concrete wall.
“Sniper!”
Another bullet struck the tunnel.
Dust exploded.
Charlotte pressed herself against the wall.
“Where?”
“Above us.”
Alexander looked toward the upper maintenance platform.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Charlotte!”
She grabbed his arm.
“I'm coming.”
Alexander stared at her.
Then nodded.
They ran through the tunnel.
More shots followed.
They reached a maintenance staircase.
Alexander climbed first.
Charlotte followed.
At the top was an abandoned control room.
A sniper rifle lay beside the window.
But nobody was there.
Charlotte looked around.
“He left.”
Alexander examined the rifle.
“No.”
“What?”
He pointed toward the scope.
A small red light blinked.
“Remote-controlled.”
Charlotte stared.
“So whoever fired it wasn't here.”
Alexander nodded.
Then the computer screen activated.
A video appeared.
Edward Vale.
Charlotte froze.
Her father sat behind a desk.
He looked calm.
Almost peaceful.
He stared directly into the camera.
“Charlotte.”
She couldn't breathe.
Edward continued.
“If you're watching this, then you've discovered the truth.”
Charlotte's hands tightened.
Alexander stood beside her.
Edward looked tired.
“I know what you've been told.”
“That I created the Crown Circle.”
“That I betrayed your mother.”
“That I abandoned you.”
He paused.
“Some of those things are true.”
Charlotte's heart sank.
“But not all.”
Alexander whispered:
“What are you doing?”
Edward continued.
“Your mother believed I was the Architect.”
“She was wrong.”
Charlotte stared.
Edward leaned closer.
“The man who controls the Crown Circle is not me.”
“Not Damian.”
“Not Richard.”
“And not Alexander.”
Charlotte's heart pounded.
“Then who?”
Edward looked directly into the camera.
“You.”
Charlotte froze.
Alexander turned toward her.
“What?”
Edward continued.
“The Crown Circle was created around one purpose.”
“To control the Vale inheritance.”
“And for twenty years, they believed that inheritance belonged to you.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“But it doesn't.”
Edward smiled sadly.
“It belongs to someone else.”
Alexander's face changed.
“Me.”
Edward nodded.
“Yes.”
Charlotte looked at her brother.
The video continued.
“Alexander was the original heir.”
“He was supposed to inherit everything.”
“But Elena changed the succession agreement before her death.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“She changed it to me.”
“No.”
Edward's voice became softer.
“She changed it to both of you.”
Charlotte stared.
“Both?”
“The Solmere Empire cannot be controlled by one heir anymore.”
“Your mother changed the trust.”
“She divided control between her two children.”
Alexander stepped closer to the screen.
“Then why did they erase Charlotte?”
Edward answered:
“Because if the two heirs reunite, the Crown Circle loses control.”
Charlotte's heart raced.
“That means…”
Alexander looked at her.
“We're stronger together.”
Edward nodded.
“But there's one problem.”
The screen flickered.
Edward's expression became grim.
“One of you has already signed away your rights.”
Charlotte turned toward Alexander.
He looked confused.
“What?”
Edward continued.
“Someone signed a transfer agreement twenty years ago.”
Charlotte stared.
“Who?”
Edward paused.
Then the screen displayed a name.
ALEXANDER VALE.
Alexander went completely still.
“No.”
Edward's voice continued.
“Your brother signed the agreement when he was six.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You were a child.”
“It doesn't matter.”
“The Crown Circle has used that document for twenty years.”
Alexander stared at the screen.
“I never signed anything.”
“You did.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“How?”
Edward looked toward the camera.
“Because the signature wasn't yours.”
A pause.
“It was mine.”
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
Edward had signed away Alexander's inheritance.
The entire empire had been built around that betrayal.
But then the video showed one final document.
A transfer agreement.
A signature.
And beneath it...
a fingerprint.
Charlotte stared.
Her face changed.
“That isn't Dad's.”
Alexander looked closer.
“No.”
Charlotte whispered:
“That fingerprint…”
She looked at her own hand.
The same small scar near her thumb.
The same pattern.
Her eyes widened.
“That's mine.”
Alexander stared at her.
“How could your fingerprint be on a document from twenty years ago?”
Charlotte couldn't answer.
The screen suddenly went black.
Then a final message appeared.
YOU WERE NEVER JUST THE HEIR, CHARLOTTE.
YOU WERE THE KEY.
The room fell silent.
Alexander slowly turned toward her.
“What does that mean?”
Charlotte looked at her hand.
Then toward the dark tunnel.
And somewhere in the distance, a phone began ringing again.
This time, Charlotte's phone.
She answered.
A familiar male voice whispered:
“Now you finally understand.”
Charlotte froze.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
“You've been asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
The voice answered:
“Why does your mother have your fingerprint on a document signed before you were born?”
The call ended.
Charlotte looked at Alexander.
Neither spoke.
May you like
Because they both knew the truth had just become much darker.
Charlotte's existence itself might have been part of the plan.
