Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Mask

The footsteps grew louder.

One.

Two.

Then dozens.

They echoed through the underground headquarters like a countdown.

Charlotte stood beside Alexander, staring at the steel doors.

“Can we stop him?”

Alexander checked his weapon.

“No.”

Charlotte's heart dropped.

“Then why are we staying?”

“Because running is what he expects.”

Another explosion shook the walls.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Alexander grabbed Charlotte's arm.

“Stay behind me.”

She pulled away.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You're not trained.”

“Neither was I when Victoria dragged me across the hotel floor.”

Alexander almost smiled.

“Fair point.”

The steel door suddenly bent inward.

Charlotte stepped backward.

A second explosion.

BOOM!

The door flew off its hinges.

Smoke poured into the room.

Men in black tactical gear stormed inside.

Alexander raised his weapon.

Gunfire erupted.

Charlotte dropped behind the central table.

Bullets struck the metal surface.

Alexander fired back.

Two attackers fell.

Then another group entered from the opposite corridor.

Charlotte realized they were surrounded.

“Alex!”

He looked at her.

“Left side!”

He turned just as a gunman appeared.

Alexander fired.

The man dropped.

Charlotte grabbed a fallen flashlight.

“There's another door!”

Alexander looked.

A narrow emergency exit was hidden behind a bookshelf.

“Go!”

They ran.

Charlotte followed Alexander through the passage.

Behind them, gunfire continued.

The emergency door slammed shut.

They sprinted down a narrow corridor.

Charlotte was breathing hard.

“Where does this go?”

“Under the old headquarters.”

“How far?”

“About two hundred meters.”

“Then what?”

“Then we pray.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“You're joking?”

“No.”

They reached the end.

A metal ladder descended into darkness.

Alexander climbed first.

Charlotte followed.

When she reached the bottom, she found herself inside an old subway tunnel.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Rust covered the tracks.

Alexander looked around.

“We're safe.”

A gunshot echoed behind them.

He immediately changed his mind.

“Never mind.”

They ran.

Above them, the headquarters burned.

The man in the dark suit walked through the smoke.

He didn't rush.

He didn't need to.

His men moved around him.

One approached.

“Sir.”

The man looked at him.

“They escaped.”

“Where?”

“The lower tunnels.”

The man smiled.

“Let them run.”

The soldier hesitated.

“Shouldn't we follow?”

“No.”

“Why?”

The man looked toward the destroyed command room.

“Because Charlotte doesn't know what she's carrying.”

The soldier frowned.

“What do you mean?”

The man held up a small device.

A Founder Access chip.

“She activated the system.”

He smiled.

“And the system activated something else.”

Charlotte and Alexander finally stopped beneath an old railway platform.

Charlotte leaned against the wall.

“What is this place?”

Alexander looked around.

“The first Solmere headquarters.”

Charlotte stared.

“The real one?”

“Yes.”

She looked at the walls.

Old company symbols were carved into the stone.

A faded inscription read:

THE VALE FAMILY BUILT THIS EMPIRE HERE.

Charlotte touched the words.

“My mother brought me here once.”

Alexander looked at her.

“You remember?”

“Not clearly.”

“She brought me here too.”

Charlotte turned.

“You remember?”

“Yes.”

“How old were you?”

“Six.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“What happened?”

Alexander sat on an old bench.

“Our mother brought us both here.”

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“Both?”

“You were a baby.”

“I was here?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Alexander looked toward the tracks.

“She told us this place would belong to us someday.”

Charlotte smiled sadly.

“She told me something similar.”

Alexander nodded.

Then his expression changed.

“But she also said something else.”

“What?”

“She told me to protect you.”

Charlotte stared.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“But you were six.”

“So were you.”

They both laughed softly.

For a moment, the war disappeared.

They were simply two siblings discovering pieces of a childhood stolen from them.

Then Alexander's expression became serious.

“I failed.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“You didn't know where I was.”

“I should have found you.”

“You were a child.”

“I became an adult.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I still became what they wanted.”

Charlotte sat beside him.

“What did they turn you into?”

Alexander stared at the dark tunnel.

“A weapon.”

He took a slow breath.

“They taught me how to manipulate markets.”

“How to destroy companies.”

“How to blackmail politicians.”

“How to disappear people.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Did you kill anyone?”

Alexander didn't answer.

She waited.

Finally he said:

“Yes.”

Charlotte's expression tightened.

“How many?”

“I don't know.”

The silence returned.

“I did things I'm not proud of.”

Alexander looked at his hands.

“I thought revenge would make me feel better.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

“Then why continue?”

He looked at her.

“Because every time I tried to stop, someone else died.”

Charlotte understood.

“You were trapped.”

Alexander nodded.

“Until Mom found me.”

Charlotte froze.

“She found you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months before she died.”

Charlotte stared.

“She knew where you were?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

Alexander looked away.

“Because I asked her not to.”

“Why?”

“Because I was being watched.”

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“You were afraid I'd be used against you.”

“Yes.”

“What happened when you saw her?”

Alexander smiled faintly.

“She cried.”

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

“She apologized.”

“For what?”

“For leaving me.”

Charlotte whispered:

“She loved you.”

“I know.”

“Then why did she die?”

Alexander's expression darkened.

“Because she discovered the Architect.”

Charlotte stared.

“You said the lawyer was the Architect.”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“He's working for the Architect.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Then who is the real one?”

Alexander stood.

“Someone higher.”

“How much higher?”

Alexander looked toward the ceiling.

“Higher than the Crown Circle.”

Charlotte felt a chill.

“Who?”

Alexander walked toward an old control panel.

He activated it.

A hidden screen appeared.

On it was a list of names.

At the top:

SOLMERE FOUNDING TRUST.

Charlotte frowned.

“What is that?”

“The original legal structure of the empire.”

Alexander pointed at a name.

“Your mother didn't own Solmere.”

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“What?”

“She controlled it.”

“What's the difference?”

“The empire was placed into a family trust.”

Alexander pointed at another line.

“Your grandfather created it.”

Charlotte leaned closer.

“Who controls the trust now?”

Alexander looked at her.

“You.”

Charlotte stared.

“What?”

“The trust automatically transfers to the surviving direct heir once the previous trustee dies.”

Charlotte's heart pounded.

“My mother was the trustee.”

“Yes.”

“She died.”

“Yes.”

“So…”

“You became the controlling beneficiary.”

Charlotte stared at the screen.

“That's why they erased me.”

Alexander nodded.

“Exactly.”

“They weren't stealing my inheritance.”

“No.”

“They were stealing control of the entire empire.”

“Yes.”

Charlotte slowly understood.

“All of it.”

“Hotels.”

“Banks.”

“Airlines.”

“Real estate.”

“Investment companies.”

“Everything.”

Alexander nodded.

“And there's more.”

“What?”

He opened another file.

Charlotte read the numbers.

Her eyes widened.

The assets were far larger than she had imagined.

The Solmere Empire wasn't worth billions.

It was worth hundreds of billions.

Charlotte stared.

“Why did nobody know?”

“Because the majority is held through private trusts.”

“Then why did my mother live quietly?”

“Because she was hiding from them.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“This is insane.”

Alexander looked at her.

“There's one final problem.”

“What?”

“The trust requires one thing before you can take full control.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

“Proof that you are Elena Vale's biological daughter.”

Charlotte stared.

“But everyone knows.”

“Not legally.”

Alexander pointed toward another document.

“Your birth records were altered.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

“By whom?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Charlotte looked at the screen.

A signature appeared.

She recognized it instantly.

The signature belonged to the doctor who had delivered her.

The same doctor who had signed her original birth certificate.

The same doctor her mother had trusted.

Charlotte whispered:

“He changed my records.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alexander looked at her.

“Because the Architect ordered him to.”

Charlotte stared at the name.

Then something clicked.

“Wait.”

She turned toward Alexander.

“If the Architect needed my records changed…”

“Yes?”

“Then he knew I existed.”

Alexander nodded.

“Long before my mother died.”

Charlotte's face hardened.

“How long?”

Alexander looked at the date.

“Since the day you were born.”

A sound echoed from the tunnel.

Footsteps.

Charlotte and Alexander froze.

Someone was approaching.

Alexander reached for his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

A figure appeared at the far end of the tunnel.

Charlotte's heart stopped.

It was an old man.

He walked slowly.

No weapon.

No guards.

He stopped beneath the flickering light.

Charlotte recognized him.

The doctor.

The man who had signed her birth certificate.

The man who had changed her records.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

Charlotte stepped forward.

“You.”

The doctor looked at her.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I've been waiting for you.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Stay back.”

The doctor shook his head.

“I didn't come to hurt her.”

Charlotte stared.

“You changed my identity.”

“Yes.”

“You erased me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped them steal my inheritance.”

The doctor lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Charlotte's voice became cold.

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because they had your brother.”

Charlotte froze.

The doctor continued.

“And they threatened to kill him.”

Alexander's face changed.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

The doctor reached inside his coat.

Alexander aimed his gun.

“Slowly.”

The doctor pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to Charlotte.

“Your mother left this with me.”

Charlotte opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Edward.

Alexander.

And a newborn Charlotte.

All four together.

Charlotte stared at the picture.

Then she noticed something behind them.

A man standing in the doorway.

His face was blurred.

But the silver watch was visible.

The same watch.

The same man.

Charlotte looked at the doctor.

“Who is he?”

The doctor began shaking.

“You don't understand.”

“Tell me.”

“He was there the day you were born.”

Charlotte's heartbeat accelerated.

“Who?”

The doctor whispered:

“The man your mother trusted most.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Name him.”

The doctor looked terrified.

Then he said:

“Edward Vale.”

Charlotte froze.

Her father's name.

She shook her head.

“No.”

The doctor nodded.

“Yes.”

“He was there.”

Charlotte backed away.

“My father?”

The doctor looked at her.

“Your father wasn't protecting your family.”

He swallowed.

“He was the one who gave the Architect access to you.”

Charlotte's world collapsed.

And somewhere above the tunnel, a phone began ringing.

Alexander looked toward the ceiling.

Then his face went pale.

“That isn't possible.”

“What?”

He whispered:

“That's my private emergency line.”

The ringing continued.

Alexander slowly answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Hello, son.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

Charlotte stared at him.

The voice continued.

“It's been a long time.”

Alexander's hand began to shake.

Charlotte whispered:

“Who is it?”

Alexander looked at her.

His face was filled with terror.

“Dad.”

The call ended.

And for the first time since Charlotte had returned to Solmere...

May you like

she realized the man she had spent the entire night trying to find might not be her greatest enemy.

He might be the man who had started everything.
